What is the safest way to jailbreak my 3GS 3.1.2?

So i have brought a brand new iphone 3gs on 3.1.2 with the older baseband, i have read disaster stories about people jail breaking and having to update to the new 3.1.3 software.

I use a mac so i would love to know what is the most reliable software to jailbreak my new 3gs on firmware 3.1.2.

I take that you meant brand new iphone 3GS 3.1.2 with older bootrom ?
Is this what you meant ?
