I have https://www.paygonline.com/websc/index.jsp since a couple years, even before the iPhone showed up. If you're not a resident in the US buy a simcard on ebay, costs 10$ and comes with a 10$ credit on it.
Activate once you are in the US, you can buy refill cards in lots of places. once activated you can add MediaNet package for 3G.
    works perfect for me.

    Hope this helps,
    v.

Nope, once in the US you get a refill card, lots of stores carry it.
If you buy one of the simcards via ebay, it comes with a how-to. Short form: once in the US with the simcard in the iphone you dial 611. they'll guide you : voice menu. You can split then the money into call, data, text messaging, pretty easy.
Only important thing is to get the starter kit while you are still at home. to check just goto eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices and search for "Pay As You Go at&t". They are mostly called "Brand New AT&T 3G PREPAID KIT w SIM CARD Pay As You Go" or similar.

Hey, that sounds great! Once you get your simcard it will come with a how-to. Registeriung is to be finished once you are in the US on the website. All instaructions will come with the simcard. In step 1 or two you have to enter your home address - this would have to be a valid US address, zip code / city is checked automatically.
Lots of my friends use Apple Store addresses, hotel address etc.
One more during the initial setup they will get you a real us phone number, the area code is matching the address you provide. Cause national calls are all the same price, this does not matter, you can choose any NYC address, getting 212 area code or so.
One more hint. Besides the MediaNet package they offer text messaging packages (SMS). They are damn cheap like 200 Messages for 5 US$, national and international.
One last for the road. Starbucks is all over the US. They provide free WiFi access for iPhone/AT&T customers. So I usually hang out around Starbucks when needing to transfer large amounts of data via the iPhone and use AT&T's WiFi, saving my money ;-)

Have fun in NYC, have been living there for three years a while ago

I assumed Starbucks wifi was only free for AT&T users with a contract - thats superb if I can use with pay as you go as I always spend a lot of time inbetween shopping with a good coffee hence I will go there and phone home via Skype as I assue Skype cannot be hacked on 3G anymore

Im actually staying in the Grand Hyatt (Grand Central) hence will use that addy!!!

    Great stuff - many thanks!!!
