    Default Use 3GS with AT&T EDGE-only plan?

Hi, I have AT&T plan that works with my iPhone 2G. I have a 3GS recently purchased from a third party. If I put my SIM card in the 3GS I get a text and email from AT&T saying that I'm using 3G phone and have plan that supports only EDGE, and that I need to call them. I also had 3G turned off via SBSettings, only EDGE was on.
I don't need their stupid slow 3G speed, EDGE works well enough for me. Not to talk about price tags, I am paying $15/month for EDGE and they want double for 3G.
Is there any way to use my 3GS without having to change data plan to 3G? Would they agree to disable 3G for my account so I can use my 3GS with EDGE only?
    Thanks

AT&T want their share of the subsidy for the 3GS iPhone. That is why they are pushing you to choose a higher plan.

The problem is not the use of 3G, it is that AT&T can detect (likely via IMEI) what model iPhone you are using and then use that info to try and extract the correct subsidy out of you by forcing you to switch plans.

Have you completed your 2 year 2G iPhone contract with AT&T?

You bought the phone second hand, signed no contract with AT&T regarding a subsidy. Talk with AT&T about this...

Yes, my plan is over with them. I pay month-to-month. I bought the phone new, but wanted to keep it since it has the old bootrom and untethered jb.
I wonder if they will agree to shut off 3G from their end and let me use my 3GS with EDGE only. I guess I have to ask them, even I'm willing to sign a new 2-year contract if they do that. Posted here to see if any other member(s) had to deal with this...
    Thanks for your reply

Sorry to revive an old thread but someone may benefit from this info. Just hung up with AT&T. They said you cannot add/activate ANY new smartphone and get ANY other data plan than $30(data) and $5+(text). This is a requirement not an option any more. They changed their rules last September. Even if one wants to activate EDGE-only phone, it will still be $35+ additional on each line. Reason they let iPhone 2G (and other EDGE customers) have $15 data plans is because customers activated before September last year.
    Too bad. Bye-bye AT&T!
T-Mo, here I come - $139.99 Family plan (2 lines) with Unlimited talk+3G+text, no contract required.
