    Default upgrading to FActory unlocked?

So my friend bought a new 3GS from orange telecom in the UK.
he bought it without a contract and paid a good amount of money.
Now he moved to another country and he was asking me something that made me really confused:
    - In the US you can buy an iphone without a contract but how will you use it without an AT&T SIM? they do not sell factory unlocked right?
    - How about in the UK? can we somehow contact orange telecom and ask for an upgrade to factory unlocked (they can do it remotely).
I know we can do it in France via the same company (orange).
I tried to email them and awaiting their reply.

    correct ...
the only way to use it without at&t is to jailbreak and unlock it.

I believe in UK, you can ask the telecom provider to unlock it for a fee.
Not sure if you have to be in the contract for X amount of time before they can do it. Someone here may be able to answer better than me

Just to clarify, AT&T no longer offer the ability to buy an iPhone without a contract. This was an option until just after the 3GS was released. Now you must have a contract and you also must return the iPhone if you cancel the contract within the first 30 days.

After 31 days you can cancel the contract but you need to pay extra cancellation fees that increases the total price up to between $500 and $600.

they replied to me (orange), saying they have the option to upgrade to unlocked status, but I need to be a contracted user with a minimum of 3months and not a pay as you go user. the only problem is that they did not mention in their contracts or anywhere that the user could not use the phone abroad.
I told them that I moved (I am talking instead of my friend) permanetly to another country and I need to use the phone which does not have a carrier here. so hope they will get back to me with more details.

Well, that is rubbish service. I am in the market for a 'factory unlocked' iPhone, and after some research, it seems the cheapest and easiest option is to buy PAYG from O2 (in the UK) and then they will 'factory unlock' the phone for 15 (free if you are on monthly contract) Of course the 12 months 3G and BTOpenzone wireless access you get stops when you unlock it, but still it's a much cheaper option than buying an Italian or Hong Kong factory unlocked off of fleabay for 100 more... no brainer really..

Tell Orange that O2 will unlock PAYG for 15... and can you also give them a kick in the balls from me..
