Default upgrade and unlock 3gs 3.1.2 to 4.1

Hi all, sorry if this is not the proper forum for this question. I have an iphone 3GS on 3.1.2 firmware 05.11.07 it was previously unlocked with blackrain. I would like to upgrade it but still have an unlocked and jailbroken iphone. Is this possible? Should I use pwnage or something else?

Yes you should use PwnageTool i recommend 4.1.2 (to go to iOS 4.1). Pwnagetool 4.1.2 works with both old and new bootrom 3GS - but requires that you save a SHSH for 4.1 (which you can still do via TinyUmbrella before iOS 4.2 is released)

if you have an old bootrom 3GS (ie you don't need to run blackra1n each time you restart the iPhone) then you could also use pwnagetool 3.1.5 - to go to iOS 3.1.3 or pwnagetool 4.0.1 to go to iOS 4.0

Do not use anything else. You risk losing your unlock.
    Do not use sn0wbreeze.

Also, just to be very pedantic - blackra1n is not an unlock - read http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/32703.htm for an explanation of the differences between the three terms. You most likely used blacksn0w for your unlock (which is a very bad idea), I hope you have already switched to using ultrasn0w for unlock instead (much more stable)

    I have similar case too.

I have 3.1.2 with 05.11.07 with OLD bootrom, jailbroken with blackra1n and unlocked with blacksn0w (as that was the one of the first available unlock for 3.1.2 and it was already unlocked when I got it). Also, I do not have the original SIM.

Can you please suggest what should I do?

    1. Use sn0wbreeze/PwnageTool, build a custom firmware with 4.1 and 05.11.07 baseband, I know its not a good idea as you said to use blacksn0w, please suggest what can i do here?

    2. Use sn0wbreeze/PwnageTool, build a custom firmware with 4.1 and latest baseband on 4.1, jailbreak and unlock with ultrasn0w?

    3. Move to 3.1.3 with sn0wbreeze/PwnageTool and the 3.1.3 baseband and jailbreak and unlock with ultrasn0w and then upgrade to 4.1?

[only reason I have mentioned sn0wbreeze here is coz, I have a PC only, dont have MAC ]

I know 05.11.07 and blacksn0w is not a good thing and moving to ultrasn0w is the best thing, but how do I do it? I would like to move to 4.1 preferably with latest baseband with unlock on my 3GS.

It would be great if you can help me with this.

    Thanks in advance.

I recall I have answered you already in another thread. Ultrasn0w supports unlocking 05.11.07 - so I recommend you remove blacksn0w and replace it with ultrsan0w asap.

You should do some research/preparation before jumping into any updates and check if you have any SHSH saved for iOS 4.1 and other iOS versions.

If you really want to go to 4.1, I recommend you build a virtual machine running a hackint0sh'd OS x 10.5 or 10.6 - then use that to generate the pwnagetool images.

The official pwnagetool 4.1/4.1.2 releases only supports restoring custom IPSW on a 3GS when you have a SHSH for iOS 4.1 saved.

Yes, you did reply me on other thread. Now, am replying as it might help others with same issue.

Removing blacksn0w and installing ultrasn0w is just go into Cydia, remove/uninstall redsn0w add the repository for ultrasn0w and install the ultrasn0w? Is this how you do it? Or do I need to build the firmware completely?

Coming to upgrading to 4.1 I will look at having the VM and use the pwnagetool to upgrade to 4.1

I have the SHSH's already for stored 3.1.3, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2.1 on cydia as well as on my PC.

Or do I need to build the firmware completely? For this I dont have the SHSH for 3.1.2. I know you've mentioned in many posts blacksn0w is not good. I bought a phone with blacksn0w

EDIT: I googled and found people have removed blacksn0w from cydia. I tried that by removing blacksn0w from cydia and installing ultrasn0w. It didnt connect to the network, it didnt go to searching... at all. Then I removed ultrasn0w and went back to blacksn0w by installing it again, it restored my unlock luckily.

Did you reboot after removing blacksn0w? If you had not previously installed mobilesubstrate (and subsequently rebooted) you may also have needed to reboot after installing ultrasn0w.

In theory it should be as simple as that, If the uninstall from Cydia isn't working, I can provide manual instructions for removing blacksn0w. It's not very complex.

Yes, I did reboot after removing blacksn0w then installed ultrasn0w and rebooted and tried it. But, still no luck.

I dont have to run blackra1n each time I restart the iPhone.

I did a search in this forum and found how to check if blacksn0w is getting removed properly or not. I checked the folder /usr/lib and there was no blacksn0w.dylib but still ultrasn0w didnt work. I didnt restore the commcentre as I wanted to post my findings here for you and check with you how to manually remove blacksn0w. I installed blacksn0w back and everything was working fine.

    Few events happened after this:

While I was going to let you know my findings, I did a sync with itunes, just apps and contacts, just to make sure I have backed-up all my data (Just so If I had to replace commcentre). After the sync my phone was connecting to the carrier but not to wi-fi (I guess the famous wi-fi issue, which I used to face 7-8 months, but I have not come across this since that time, do not know the reason why not). As I saw the wi-fi issue I reset the network settings (as that used to work for me 7-8 months back). After that iPhone restarted and is stuck at "apple logo".

I did a search seems like it is a boot loop. I tried connecting to iRecovery, I see got USB and in recovery mode after that I issued "set auto-boot true", "saveenv", "fsboot" and "reboot" I dont get any feedback from iRecovery that commands are successful or things like that, but on "reboot" the iPhone reboots. But, it goes into loop again and shows me apple logo. Tried this 3 times, no success yet. Tried this thrice coz people have tried lot of times to get through. For me no luck yet.

Well, coz of these events..... now I am stuck with another problem, apple logo at boot.

Can you please suggest me, what should I do now?

    1. If I am missing anything to come out of the boot loop?
    2. Restore to custom 4.0.1 or 4.0.2? or any other?

This is what I have currently (but, stuck at boot loop with apple logo, funny but true ):

    OS ver: 3.1.2
bootrom: OLD bootrom (dont have to run blackra1n on reboots)
    baseband: 05.11.07
    jailbreak: blackra1n
    unlock: blacksn0w RC1

    SHSH saved: 3.1.3, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2.1

Thanks for your help. Please let me know how should proceed.

Do you need the čxisting data on your phone? You have recently taken a sync of the phone - so I'm hoping the answer will be no.

    My suggestions:

    1. Make a backup of the backup that iTunes made of your phone when you synced
    2. make a custom IPSW for 3.1.2 and restore to that - then set your iPhone up as new (be 100% sure you have a backup of your backup first)
    3. if that doesn't fix your wifi problem, use the last-ditch method Preventing baseband update as a last-ditch effort [iPhone Dev Team]
    4. if that doesn't fix your wifi problem, the next step is to try and reflash your baseband at the same level. I posted a thread about how to extract and reflash the baseband.

I have all the data backed up except few pictures which I can afford to loose. That is ok.

I dont have the SHSH for 3.1.2, will I be able to restore to custom IPSW for 3.1.2? If yes, I should build a custom with no baseband?
