    Default Unlocking options for 3GS

I have a 1st gen iPhone, that I have been pwning since Pwnage Tool came out. I used to read these forums a lot, but lately I haven't followed much because not much action happens on 1st gen iPhones. My wife got a 3GS in December 2009. It's 3.1.2 out of the box, (still on 3.1.2, good news), baseband 05.11.07 (good news again), but most likely new bootroom (many signs, unfortunately). What are the options for an unlock? I had a quick read of various forums, and to me it does not look good. Unlocks seem to have problems, and the more reliable ones (still good old Pwnage Tool, by my quick reading) seem not working on new bootrooms.

Can somebody knowledgeable on these issues give me a feedback on this?

    Thanks a lot

See - http://www.hackint0sh.org/f159/99540.htm#post473847 for details on how to check that you have old or new bootrom. The first link on that post explains how to find this out. A new iPhone in December 2009 is 99% new bootrom but it pays to check.

Look at Apple has stopped signing 3.1.2 for 3GS today to see why you need to be careful about any jailbreak you perform on a 3.1.2. You need to get your 3.1.3 SHSH now even before deciding what jailbreak to use - as if you ever have problems, you want to be able to restore to the oldest OS version possible (right now on your iPhone that is OS 3.1.3)

If you have a SIM card that can activate the iPhone via iTunes (for example, if the iPhone is locked to AT&T then you need an AT&T sim card) then I recommend you use spirit jailbreak. This gives you an untethered jailbreak

Otherwise I recommend you use redsn0w jailbreak. This is a tethered jailbreak.

Pwnagetool *might* be able to work on new bootrom 3GS if there is a sufficiently low level exploit found. Right now it is not an option for you.

    Unlock -

    Use blacksn0w RC2 http://www.hackint0sh.org/f230/117709.htm

Thanks. I came to the conclusion of using spirit and RC2 with further reading and input. With regard to Apple signing and SHSH, I think I can use tinyumbrella, can't I?

tinyumbrella will just give you a SHSH for 3.1.3 (which is useful but will not allow you to restore 3.1.2)

To be 100% clear, if something goes wrong with your iPhone - you will have no choice but to restore to OS 3.1.3. You can still jailbreak. I recommend you take the Last Ditch 3.1.3 Restore which will allow you to use blacksn0w RC2.

i am not sure why you are saying that tinyumbrella will give me a SHSH for 3.1.3, since my wife's iphone's running 3.1.2 at the moment. shouldn't tinyumbrella give me the SHSH for whatever fw i am running? that's the beauty of it

Nope. It is Apple who controls what SHSH you can request. They blocked requests for 3.1.2 SHSH in early Feb 2010.

There is no connection between the OS you are running and the valid SHSH blobs you can request.

got it. the tinyumbrella website isn't too clear about it. but so, if i upgrade her phone to 3.1.3, can i still use spirit to jailbreak and RC2 to unlock?

If you use this method to upgrade Preventing baseband update as a last-ditch effort [iPhone Dev Team] and you have a SIM card (that came with the 3GS or is from the same carrier that the 3GS is locked to) which iTunes will accept to kick the iPhone past the "slide for emergency call" screen then you can use Spirit to jailbreak and blacksn0w RC2 to unlock.
