    Default unlocking help??

ok so i want to buy a iphone 3gs a used on of kijji, but the thing is that its locked to Rogers and my service is from Fido. Which unlock tool do i use?

and is it easy to unlock? and what version does it have to be so i can unlock it?

and to see if the phone is jailbroken, it has to have cydia on it right?

You would want to use ultrasn0w to unlock the device, regardless of firmware version (so long as it's greater than 3.0).

3.1.2 is easily jailbreakable and unlockable, 4.0 and 4.0.1 are also easily jailbreakable and unlockable. Anything older than 3.1.2 and while you can probably make it work, it will be more of a hassle. Don't forget that restoring firmware to the 3GS requires an SHSH -- if the guy you're buying from doesn't have one, you'll only have one shot at this -- if you mess up during jailbreaking or the jailbreak process fails, you'll be forced to restore to 4.0.2 -- which cannot be jailbroken or unlocked at present on the 3GS...

Also, any phone that has Cydia *IS* jailbroken, however, you can jailbreak a phone and not install Cydia -- so just because you don't see Cydia doesn't mean the phone isn't jailbroken. There are other ways to tell (plugging into the computer and using iPhoneBrowser to see if it has access to the root filesystem or if it's just in the sandbox, etc.)
The preceding forum post has been brought to you by the letter "N" and the number 42.

    iPhone 4, 32GB (iOS 6.1.2 | evasi0n | SHSH: 4.0 - 6.1.2)
    iPad 2 3G, 64GB (iOS 6.1.2 | evasi0n
    |
    SHSH: 4.3 & 4.3.3 - 6.1)

Why will it be more of a hassle?

Whats an SHSH? and i read that 4.1 is in the works of being jailbroken?

is there anyway to see if its jailbroken on the spot without a computer?

    and last question
how do you erase the previous owners info and everything off the 3gs, and is there anyway to do this without losing the jailbreak and unlock?

I can only second guess what @n1ckn4m3 meant here. I think he meant to type 3.1.3 (which can be jailbroken by jailbreak me or spirit)

3.1.2 or lower only have low level jailbreak available, and if you have a new bootrom 3GS then you are limited to a tethered jailbreak (which is no fun)

@n1ckn4m3 correct me if I have interpreted your statement incorrectly.

It is, but the reports in the media are overhyped. The breakthrough was made the same day 4.1 came out and a finished jailbreak is still at least a few weeks away. Not sure if it will be tethered or untethered yet.

Not really, it is possible to make a jailbroken iPhone look pretty similar to a non jailbroken iPhone.

Don't use "erase all content and settings", that will generally remove the jailbreak/unlock.

If you have old bootrom 3GS, you can restore with a custom IPSW and set the iPhone up as new. That will remove all traces but preserve the low level pwn.

Other than that.. there are threads that talk about solutions to the iTunes cannot read the contents of this iPhone type problem. The solution for that effectively removes the previous owners content.

    Code:
    rm -R /private/var/mobile/Media
You can likely also use any AFC2 browser (for example DiskAid) to delete the Media folder and it's contents.
Followed by a reset all settings on the iPhone.

That avoids wiping the OS or removing the jailbreak. (this is untested, but in theory should work)

You got it -- I meant to type 3.1.3. While I prefer (personally) the low-level Pwn provided by redsn0w/PwngeTool, from a user perspective it's definitely not as easy as Spirit / Jailbreakme, and as you mentioned, on new bootrom 3GS, 3.1.2 and earlier are tethered and require the plug-in to boot (which is a hassle, definitely.)
