Default UK People - Buying a PAYG 3G S in an Apple Store

Guys, just been onto the Apple site to check availability of handsets at my "local" store in Birmingham (1 hour away by train)

    It states:

What You Will Need to Bring:

    Pay & Go plans:

UK credit or debit card (with account number and sort code)
PAC code from your current network if you want to keep your existing phone number with O2

Is this correct - I have the cash all ready to purchase - but why would I need a card for a PAYG phone?

I can't just walk in and pay cash for the handset?

It might be to do with issues in the past where people bought a number of iPhone handsets with cash, unlocked them and sold them on eBay. So apple changed the rules a bit to limit buying iPhone handsets from Apple stores with cash.

Or it might be some of the new rules (which may or may not be happening in the UK) designed to stop organized crime getting their hands on prepaid phones using false identity information.

Same thing happened to me with the 3G when that came out.
Went into an O2 store with the ready cash in my hand, but was refused. They said I had to pay on card so they had a record of who owned the phone.
So in the end I had to walk to the bank, put the cash into my account - then go back and pay with my debit card.

Well - went into the Birmingham Store on Wednesday evening - and I can confirm - if you want to buy a Pay & Go iPhone 3G-S - you have to pay for it with a Credit or Debit Card registered to a UK Address - as they scan the SIM and link it to the phone in-store - then they do the Top Up there and then.

Cheapest Pay & Go price - in total is 450.40 - 440.40 for the Phone itself - and 10 initial Top Up

do you absolutley have to pay the 10 top up? I'm thinking of using a simplicity sim so the payg sim is a waste of . any issues selling that sim (as its linked to me on the registration).

    hi everyone

i just arrived from London and it is was impossible to get an Iphone 3GS pay&go without an UK credit card registered with an UK zip code in O2 stores and Regent Street Apple store , no way.

Only for UK card registered in UK (i have a friend that has an UK credit card but it is registered in switzerland and zip code was not allow in O2 top up web site when we we tried to buy the iphone in Apple store).

    Really i am so sad.

    Best regards
