Transition to IMEI unlock from Hacktivation/Ultrasnow
I have a 3GS that's currently jailbroken on 4.1 with baseband 5.13.04, new bootloader phone(xxx124). I'm on T-mobile so up to this point I've always had to hacktivate and software unlock with ultrasn0w, which is currently the case; however I just purchased an IMEI based unlock on Ebay and I'm having trouble getting iTunes to unlock the phone for me. I tried uninstalling ultrasn0w so the sim isn't recognized, but it still won't unlock.
I believe my problem may be my hacktivation? The seller told me I should do a restore, however I don't believe that will do the trick since my restore ipsw is pre hacktivated.
Would unactivating it with Redsn0w and then connecting it to iTunes trigger the unlock and proper activation? Should I remove Ultrasn0w before so the sim is no longer recognized or can I leave it installed? I suppose another option would be to make a new custom ipsw that isn't pre activated, however I don't particularly wish to do another restore on it as I've had some bad luck (iTunes errors + stuck in recovery loop) trying to update it to 5.0.1 with the proper shsh blobs stitched and everything and finally managed to get 4.1 back on it.

You shouldn't need to restore to de-hacktivate, you're correct. The easiest way to do this is using the SAM Tools, it has a 'remove Hacktivation' utility.
1) Add the following repo in cydia: repo.bingner.com
2) Install SAM and SAMPrefs from Cydia
3) Reload Springboard when requested
4) Run SAM
5) Go to Utilities and Pick 'De-Activate iPhone'
6) Verify under 'More Info' that the phone's activation state now shows 'Unactivated'
This should remove the hacktivation on your phone and prepare it to be activated with iTunes.
Additionally, yes, telling redsn0w to remove hacktivation should put the phone in a non-activated state and let you activate through iTunes. I prefer the SAM method but they both should solve the problem.
