    Default stuck in DFU cannot restore 3Gs

    hi, I'm playing with an iPhone 3Gs new bootroom factory unlocked that got stuck in DFU mode after "restoring to a custom 4.1" (as I've been told) and we have no infos about saved SHSH.
    I made an attempt with DFU pwned, Tinyumbrella and a 4.1 custom (not really sure it might have been the right thing to do though) but after the white screen all I get is an iTunes "error 28".
    Is it definitely an hardware failure or could also be, let's say, the battery too low?

    I might try to restore to a stock 4.2.1 and see if it fixes the boot but if we don't have a SHSH we won't be able to go back to 4.1 and do a proper jb...... is there any possibility to check for saved SHSH when you're stuck to DFU?

    Pretty sure you have already destroyed your existing valid SHSH signed 4.1 NOR boot images on the device by restoring to custom 4.1 without a saved SHSH.

    First step would be to get your ECID (you can get this when the device is in DFU mode) and using the "manual ECID" option in Tiny Umbrella to create a custom device. Then query Cydia for a SHSH.

    28 is normally a bad dock connector board in the phone, and is generally a hardware issue, but could also be battery related. Can I see a restore log? http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/130802.htm

    As the device is factory unlocked, the only negative of restoring to 4.2.1 is you are (for now) limited to a tethered jailbreak (if you choose to jailbreak at all).
    Is the device under warrany?

    oh nice to know, that part with Tinyumbrella and custom devices wasn't really clear to me;
    we've got some results here, there's a 4.1 SHSH saved!

    I've been trying then to restore to a stock 4.1 with tinyumbrella fired up and this is the error 28 log I get on my winxp sp3 machine:

    #1502181 - Pastie

    I'm not able to understand the log but it seems like the restore process is aborting because it is "unable to find AppleNANDFTL"... does it sound bad?
    no clue about the warranty, I've got to ask to the owner

    Yes that can be bad, however you should try another computer (preferably a mac).

    NAND errors are often "you might as well sell the thing on ebay for spare parts" but this specific error, "waiting for NAND" has sometimes been fixed by using a mac instead.

    That's about the only thing I have seen that can help with this specific error (except hardware repairs)

    Letting the battery completely drain or even taking it out of the device for at least an hour (only if you are comfortable doing so and know that this will void your warranty) can also sometimes fix this issue.
