Exclamation Stuck at Apple Logo after Remote Wipe: Am I Sunk?

    Hello everyone,

When my stolen 3GS (3.0.1 JB/unlocked) was returned and I turned it on, remote wipe went to work on it, leaving it with a black screen and the Apple logo. How can I get my phone working again? Have I lost my ability to JB/unlock it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In case you're wondering...I am not a thief! (I can post a photo of the purchase receipt if someone tells me how to.) This really did happen to my iPhone. I hope my reputation here speaks for me and people are willing to help.

    Thanks in advance!

    What Happened
My iPhone was stolen by a 13-yr old brat in my neighborhood so I used "remote wipe" through Find My iPhone (I didn't know at the time who stole it). When his parents discovered it and brought it back to me (luckily ), the remote wipe went into effect as soon as I turned the phone back on.

After the remote wipe, the screen went black. Then the Apple logo came on. An empty white progress bar box showed up underneath the Apple, but I don't remember seeing any progress bar going in the box. Then, the progress bar box disappeared and the spin wheel showed up superimposed on the Apple logo, but it didn't spin. After several minutes, the spin wheel disappeared, the screen when black for a flash and the whole process started over again (minus the progress bar part).

    What's Happening Now
For the past few minutes, the screen has been black with the Apple logo and the spin wheel (not moving) superimposed on it.

    Thanks for the reply!

Is restoring to official 3.1.2 my only option? I prefer to avoid BlackRa1n/Sn0w because of the reported issues and stay on the Pwnage Train using UltraSn0w on my old baseband. According to Apple's support site, the remote wipe should have only erased media and data. It shouldn't leave my 3GS stuck at the Apple logo. I hope the JB/unlock didn't fool with the remote wipe working properly (and I can't imagine how it could). I've searched for hours and haven't been able to find any postings about remote wipes on any of the main forums and blogs.

I was only recommending the official option because that will work for for all.
If you were jailbroken before you should be able to put the iPhone into recovery mode and restore with a pwnagetool custom ipsw.

Thanks! I'll try it first thing in the morning. I'm am so tired now I'd probably screw it up. :p In fact, I'm feeling rather stupid that I didn't think of that myself.

I'm just worried that something happened during the remote wipe that could cause the restore to not work. Has anyone else reported Remote Wipe problems after JB/unlocking? I searched everywhere, but couldn't find any mention of Remote Wipe getting stuck.

Update: It's not showing up in iTunes, so I'll try DFU mode. If that doesn't work, any ideas on what I could try?

Update 2: It's not going into DFU mode either.

Update 3: Bit the bullet and contacted official MobileMe support via live chat. The guy was useless. As soon as he read it's not showing up in iTunes, he was stumped and directed me to regular iPhone support, which of course is closed.

Are you sure you are doing it correctly? http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/54082.htm

I don't think the remote wipe is any different to "erase all content and settings"

I think I'm doing it properly. I've done it many times. Nothing works: reboot, restore, DFU mode. iTunes still doesn't see it. The MobileMe support guy said this problem has happened a few times before, but he has no idea what to do. I'm hoping I can find a fix and avoid having to turn it in for a new one with the new iBoot version.

Have you tried to see if another computer can see the iPhone?

If I were you, I would hop on IRC (there is a "chat on irc" link at in the hackint0sh navigation banner or you cna use a real IRC client) and see if anyone can help you there.

Thanks for the IRC advice. I've seen it mentioned among the experts, but I've never used it before. I'll look for instructions on how to do it. Is there any channel in particular I should use? Can you recommend a good Mac app for IRC?

I lent my other laptop to a friend. Later on today, I can try it on one at work. I created a new user account with admin privileges and used iTunes there and that didn't work. I cleared the iSync history and tried a few other similar things, they didn't help either.

Thanks again so much for continuing to help me out. I'm really feeling quite stuck.

    OK...now something really weird happened.

I had the phone sitting hooked up to my laptop, not doing anything with it. Suddenly, the battery symbol came up! The Apple logo disappeared. The battery symbol showed the battery was very low, which is strange since it's been hooked into my laptop all night. It should have been charging and full. After about 10 minutes, the Apple logo came up again on its own. I didn't do anything to it.

I then did a hard reset, holding home and sleep until the black screen and the plugging in the USB while holding home. The battery symbol came up again. Then, a minute late it went back to the Apple logo. At least, a hard reset is making a difference...maybe? Is this hopeful?

Now, I'm thinking there are more problems perhaps.
    - The battery drained when it should have been charging.
    - Once the battery got very low, something happened to the Apple logo status.
    - If the battery is too low, could that be why the remote wipe didn't work and it's stuck in this Apple logo loop?
    - Did the Remote Wipe cause something to burn so much energy that the battery can't charge?

*Argh* I really wish I could figure this out!

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? When the battery gets too low, the phone stops working, so now I have to also figure out how to make it charge back up again.
