    Hello,

Sorry if this is a stupid question but where can I get the custom carrier bundle version 6.5 on cydia? I'm an AT&T user that is trying to take advantage of tethering

This is my first attempt at tethering on my phone and this is what I've done so far:

    1. update iphone to 3.1.2
    2. install blackra1n
    3. install cydia
    4. go to iPhone 3.1.2 Tethering Tutorial on my iphone and select the Legit AT&T plan

What I see so far is that under general settings, a profile called "US AT&T Tethering" has been created. However, under network, I don't see the option to turn on internet tethering as shown in the link below.

    Thanks!

Furthermore, I have a PC instead of a mac. Not sure if this makes a difference. The custom carrier bundle version on my phone reads 5.6, even after rebooting.

I've read through this post but since hacking is so new to me, I couldn't understand it all.

Sorry, but still a little confused, the step to jail break is Appleguru's tutorial, and so if one was to follow Appleguru's tutorial LINK, then what else needs to be done?

EDIT: Are you saying that following tutorial is the recommended method -> http://appleguru.org/tetherRev3.html

I'm having a strange issue after loading the iphone-notes hack and the 6.5 ipcc.

Battery life on the phone is terrible. half day used to get me 70-80% battery. I was at 40%, same usage.

Push email over exchange seems to be funky. I was not getting emails and even manual refresh would have problems *sometimes* not always.

tethering? enabled it... tried to go over bt on both my mac and pc. does not work! both error out. the pc errors and says something like "cannot connect when both devices are in XXX mode" (i forget what the letters were in XXX).

after that.. i tried to restore network settings, change apn back to the original one for cellular data (apn says "phone" as default after 6.5). no luck.. battery sucks and no tethering. thoughts? how can i revert back? I didn't make a copy of my original files.

This is for iPhone 3G/3GS at iPhone OS 3.1.2 on a legit AT&T plan

First of all: I do not recommend using mobileconfigs, use modified carrier bundles. Appleguru's tutoials start confusing ppl, cause he offers several ways, some are outdated.

Here's a general way to go for:

    1. The iPhone has to be jailbroken cause CommCenter needs to be patched in order to accept custom carrier bundle (same for mobileconfigs).

    2. Patch of Commcenter can be archived in two ways as of now. If you use Balckra1n RC3 for jailbreaking, it is already done.
If you used an earlier version of Blackra1n or PwnageTool, start Cydia, add the source iphone-notes.de. You'll find a new section called Tweaks 3.1.2. In there find the patch for your iPhone (3G or 3GS) and apply it.

Steps 1 & 2 have to be done - no way around. For using the custom carrier bundles you need to re-enable ipcc injection in iTunes.

3.1 For Mac-OS X: Quit iTunes if running and start terminal (Applications/Utilities) Paste the following command and hit return:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
3.2 For Windows: Quit iTunes if running and open command prompt and paste the following command:
    "%ProgramFiles%\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

    or if you're on vista/win7 64-bit - "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

    4. Get the modified 6.5 bundle for AT&T here

    5. Apply the ipcc.
To do so on Windows: Connect iPhone and PC, start iTunes. In iTunes main screen you'll see the iPhone overview. Press Shift cap ant hit "update" (or check for update). You'll see a new windows popping up. There is a pulldown menu in this window letting you select either ipsw files (firmware) or ipcc (carrier bundles) sellect ipcc, then klick on the AT&T ipcc you downloaded and install it.
To do so on Mac: To do so on Windows: Connect iPhone and PC, start iTunes. In iTunes main screen you'll see the iPhone overview. Press Option cap ant hit "update" (or check for update). Select the ipcc you downloaded.

    6. Reboot the iPhone - done

You now have a real carrier bundle working, you can edit any value, MMS is set. There cant be any battery issues - no way.

If you ever want to get rid of the custom bundle, it is sitting in
    /private/var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles
You'll see it there along with at least one folder with a number, this is the symlink used by the system. Just delete anything inside Carrier Bundles. For deleting use Disk Aid or similar tool, SFTP will do aswell.

Word of caution: DO NOT reinstall the commcenter patch from cydia after you've installed it once. you should remove it to resort back to your original commcenter file before attempting the patch again if you suspect something may have gone wrong. i ended up with a phone that wouldnt boot past the apple logo and had a spinning wheel.

Luckily, i was able to track the IP and SSH back into the phone and find that the cydia patch actually made a backup of the old commcenter file (which ive already patched). After restoring my old commcenter, the phone booted up without any issue. Does anyone have a copy of their commcenter file? Also, is the commcenter file transferable to different devices, or do they contain unique ID's?

I suspect that something is running in the background after I performed these mods... I get a good 5 hours out of my battery when it used to last a day and a half the day before I did the mod. However, I did notice that after i did the "restore" after my phone crashed, tethering started to work. the battery issue is driving me nuts though.

You are right, dont ever "double-patch" CommCenter. Two wayy here. If you used Balckra1n RC3, Commcenter is patched, dont use the patch from Cydia then.
If you used Blackra1n RC1/2 or PwnageTool you need to run the patch vis Cydia.
CommCenter is the same no unique stuff, BUT. Commcenter from a 3G is different to one from a 3GS. It is always a good idea to have a backup. If not you might have to restore the iPhone at some point - not a problem but some work.

On battery: I run three 3GS and one 3G with tethering enabled, no issues at all. If tethering is on and used, battery will drain of cause. You#d better make sure to connect it to USB or AC if you use Bluetooth. No problem when using USB for tethering, the iPhone is charged then.
