Any help greatly appreciated

Yes you can jailbreak it, but I'm not sure if you can unlock it. You can try spiritjb.

The MC model only matters for iPod touches.
All 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 iPhones and iPod touches that can legitimately active through with iTunes running 9.1 or 9.1.1 can jailbreak with spirit.
See http://www.hackint0sh.org/f247/ for details on Spirit.
