Default Shift Resore 3GS 3.1.2 to 3.1.2 problem...

    I have a 3GS with 3.1.2 (7D11), using iTunes version 9.0.1.8 with Windows 7.

My phone has been acting funky so I decided to do a restore. I did a "shift restore" and there were no ipsw files in my "iPhone Software Updates" folder. Don't want to start any conspiracy theories, but that was strange too... I downloaded a copy of "iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore" and pasted in my folder. Then when I did my shift restore to that ipsw file, it extracted, said "verifying restore with Apple", then gave me this error message,

"The iPhone "Badkoz's iPhone" could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build."

I downloaded another ipsw file from a different site thinking maybe the first one was corrupted but had the same result.

Then to add to the conspiracy theory, I tried it again a couple hours later and noticed my ipsw file was deleted from my "iPhone Software Updates" folder again. I guess I may have done that, but I pasted it back and if it's gone later I'm gonna hide in my closet with my head covered in tinfoil!

Has anybody else noticed any such problems, or am I having a hard time finding a good copy of the ipsw file?

I will not be updating to 3.1.3 until there is a good Jailbreak solution that can be done with Windows 7, perferably like Blackra1n.

    Please, read the stickies.

This question has been answered about a zillion times.

You can't restore to 3.1.2 any more. Apple is petitioned to sign every restore file as you restore to the phone. This allows them to prohibit the upgrade or downgrade to older firmwares by stopping signing the firmware.

You can't restore to 3.1.2 if you didn't get your SHSH blobs on file and you can't get them on file anymore if you haven't now. You'll need to restore to 3.1.3 if you want to restore (but it's not recommended as that will lock/unjailbreak and there is no iBoot exploit yet and will not be for 3.1.3 -- one is not expected until 3.2)

Default Why is going 3.1.3 better than custom-ipsw 3.1.2?

Am in same boat. See here.

Custom 3.1.2 (whether cooked by someone on the interwebs or on your own mac using PwnageTool) can be installed without any issues, no?

For JB, both options work. I'd even argue 3.1.2 works rock-solid, hence better.
For Unlock, neither works (and you either need to pay the owning carrier an extorsion fee if they allow it, or only be able to use the device as a glorified iPod).

Why prefer going up to 3.1.3 over getting similar functionality on 3.1.2?
Isn't there a better chance of the 3.1.2(& 5.11.07 baseband) exploit being retrofitted to work with custom IPSW's than anyone ever sacrificing an exploit for the sake of 3.1.3?

3GS cannot install custom IPSW in DFU mode (at all) and can only install custom IPSW without SHSH (which is what is needed) if the phone is already jailbroken. Custom IPSW hack out the SHSH check. I believe this is also dependent on your bootloader, but am not 100% certain.

If he has restored a legit firmware of any kind back to the device as the last firmware he restored, he will be unable to install the custom IPSW from my understanding. If he's running the latest bootrom, he will be unable to restore the custom IPSW with the SHSH check patched out.

I definitely don't recommend he upgrade to 3.1.3 unless his phone is completely unusable as 3.1.3 is only jailbreakable (and even then, not on all devices) and not unlockable, and since 3.2 is iPad only, it'll probably be a waiting game until 4.0 in June/July for a new jailbreak/unlock.
The preceding forum post has been brought to you by the letter "N" and the number 42.

    iPhone 4, 32GB (iOS 6.1.2 | evasi0n | SHSH: 4.0 - 6.1.2)
    iPad 2 3G, 64GB (iOS 6.1.2 | evasi0n
    |
    SHSH: 4.3 & 4.3.3 - 6.1)

Custom IPSW only works with old bootrom iBoot-359.3 not iBoot-359.3.2
