You can't use songs on your iPhone to create ringtones natively on the device, you'll need to use something like iRinger on your desktop or MyTunes on the iPhone to create from your existing MP3 files.

Apple wants you to spend $0.99 for the song and then spend $0.99 for a 30 second clip of the song to use as a ringtone.

    Gotta love the double dipping.

    Good luck!

thanks for your reply.I did manage to sort it at 1.30am this mornig lol
after searching the net for ages i downloaded to programs that converted them intoiphone ringtone files and then transfered them straight to my phone using that program.BUT i got a voice over at start of both programs i used, which did my head in..as you can imagine lol
So deleted both programs and fouund another way.

The instructions i followed were to use itunes and once on a song in library click Get Info, set as aac file then shorten it to 30 secs then transfer that file to desktop. Then change the file extension (had to follow instructions on how to do that as i didnt have a clue to m4r then it automatically changed to itunes Ring.then transfered it back to itunes library and it automatically went into a Ringtones Tab.to which you then sync.

It was a lot of messing about but i did it and was glad,.and tired! lol
tried a few today and i got the hang of it now so its not as bad.

Think it's more the record labels who argued that these are two separate things and need to be able to charge twice for this. Apple convinced them to drop the price on ringones (pre-iPhone, prices were even higher for max 30 seconds of audio compared to the full track)

Agreed It's something that can be done from iTunes with the right clicks but it's just a pain to do that way. The ad in iRinger is freaking huge, but thankfully it doesn't get in the way and the functionality provided in the free version is more than enough for anything I've ever needed.

That makes sense -- I remember the ringtones used to be either $1.99 or $1.79, if memory serves. The RIAA is such a dinosaur of an organization that is no longer necessary to protect the interests of the musicians, I wish someone would take it out back and shoot it like the dead horse it is...
