Default SBSettings messed up 3GS and won't reboot

    Hi,

On a 3GS with 3.1.2 that was jb'en and unlocked using blackra1n, I have restarted and tested it with t-Mobile several times and everything worked fine.
First app that came in mind to install was the SBSettings from Cydia. After installing SBSettings it showed the message that it had to reboot: It shut down then restarted showing the apple logo. It displayed the logo for 10-15 seconds then went to a blank screen.
I've connected it to a pc with usb cable, same thing happens, tries to power up, lights up the logo for a while, then goes to blank screen. Pushing the Power button again repeats the cycle.

Appreciate any help, am pretty much out of ideas. I've just upgraded from an iPhone 2G and am fairly familiar with these steps but nothing worked so far.

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

Sounds like it might have gotten stuck during the reboot after you installed SBSettings. Try doing a Hard Reset (holding the home and power buttons). That should hopefully kick it into a proper reboot and get you back to the Springboard.

Thanks, that brought up the itunes and usb cord logo, somehow managed to enter in DFU it seems.
I've tried to use iphone browser and ifunbox but they couldn't connect while in DFU mode. iTunes did a restore and lost all apps installed and data since last backup. Good advice that I should also follow is do a backup before big events such as installing system apps...
In case anyone has a similar experience, I've managed to install SBSettings successfully by exiting Cydia (home button press) after SBSettings installed and showed the "restartd Springboard" button. After exiting, I powered it off then restarted, right now it's installed correctly and runs smooth.

    Thanks decagon !

It is not SBSettings that caused your problem but a common system enhancer that is required by SBSettings.

This is called Mobile Substrate and it is used by many system extender programs like sBSettings, Backgrounder, Winterboard etc. Mobile Substrate has a built in safe mode feature to allow you to fix a misbehaving addon that uses mmobile substrate. However it is really not possible to protect mobile substrate from something going wrong with itself.

Yes, it is generally a good idea to take a backup before upgrading thongs like mobile substrate. It pays to take note of all the packages to be installed not just the main package.

I guess I messed it up then. After jb and unlock, if one plans to install such programs as SBSettings, Winterboard... is it necessary to update or do anything to the Mobile Substrate before anything else to prevent such surprises?

    Thanks!

Cydia handles this automatically, it makes sure dependencies are installed and updated as necessary.

My point was that you should pay attention to if there will be an update to a dependency (cydia shows these) when updating the main application like SBSettings.
