Default Restore iPhone w/ password/sim card locked down?

In looking to buy 3Gs via craigslist, later today a seller brought over phone to inspect but password/sim locked. She claimed her girlfriend left town and told her to do whatever, sell it, etc.??? And she didn't leave password.

I connected to my MacBook, put into DFU mode and tried to check specs by following these instructions:

    * Put the device in DFU. – Follow this link here (Enter DFU Mode)
    * Open “System Profiler” to navigate to Hardware -> USB menu on the left.
    * Top right under “USB Device Tree Panel” click “Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode)”
    * In the upper right corner look for the information “string on the Serial Number.”
    * At the bottom you will find the description BootRom version (iBoot).
    * To exit from DFU mode and return to “Normal Mode”. Simultaneously press and hold home and power buttons still you see Apple logo and then release.

However it reads “Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)”? What can I do.

In DFU mode, can i just do a simple restore to wipe the 3Gs iPhone 'clean' and during restore, make sure no internet connect to avoid downloading newest OS - I ask only because if restore upgrades to 4 iOS without first jb, then won't be able to unlock with current pwnage tool 4.01.

Seller said her girlfriend has had iPhone for over 1 year so unless she recently upgraded, chances are it's a pre 2009 wk 40 production, with older firmware. I can then purchase from her and follow instructions to jb and unlock.

    Thanks,

Most likely that you are actually in Recovery mode and not DFU. DFU mode is not really easy to get into on the 3GS after the 3.0 updates. It will properly identify as DFU mode so long as the phone is in DFU mode and not Recovery mode. Note that Recovery mode is where you see 'Connect to iTunes', but DFU mode the screen is entirely blank and the backlight is turned on.

It's not enough to disconnect from the internet. 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 are no longer being signed by Apple, if you don't have an SHSH on file, you can no longer restore to them -- irrespective of whether or not you have internet connectivity. If it doesn't get a response, you get an error that iTunes could not contact the software update server.
