Question on Unlocking 3gs!!
hi people, this may seem like a dumb question but....
is there a difference between unlocking and jailbreaking an iphone 3gs?
im from the UK and want to unlock a iphone 3gs and wanted to know if i have to jailbreak to unlock my phone?
thanks in advance!
Yes you need to jailbreak to be able to apply the software based unlock. Your unlock is not permanent and each time you upgrade the OS on your iPhone you need to be careful to upgrade in a safe way to preserve your unlock and jailbreak.

For 3GS jailbreaking, you first need to determine the bootrom version. http://www.hackint0sh.org/f159/99540.htm#post473847 these steps do not require the iPhone to be jailbroken and make no permanant changes to the iPhone but they tell you whether or not you have to live with a tethered jailbreak (which requires you to connect the iPhone to a computer each time you restart the iPhone).
Even if you don't want to jailbreak now, I recommend you backup your ECID SHSH for OS 3.1.2
The recommended jailbreak is pwnagetool. You can also use blackra1n but pwnagetool offers a more complete jailbreak.
