    Default Question about Jailbreaking/Unlocking

I was just wondering if its possible to restore the iphone after doing both to the point where Apple wouldnt be able to tell? From what I can tell jailbreaking is no problem but I havent been able to get a clear anwser about unlocking.

From what I can tell the anwser is yes since when you do a restore the firmwares restore the baseband with the 3G models. Is this correct?

Also I was wondering if its even possible to brick a iPhone doing this? I know you can cause them not to boot but all you got to do is put it into DFU mode and restore to the stock firmware. Is this correct?

One last question, I have heard that apple has put in another layer of security for the 3Gs and that you should back up the ECID i think it was before updating. Unfortuantly I already updated to 3.0.1. Did I mess up?

    Thanks guys

Anyone? Dont mean to be a bother just wanting to get a bit more informed. I have searched for this information and havent been able to get a anwser. Also realy curious about the iBSS and iBEC files. From what i have seen people using 3.0.1 are only getting one of the files.

    Thanks again guys

With the 3GS and ECID don't upgrade to OS 3.1 when it is released without first backing up your ECID and signed iBEC/iBSS.

3.0.1 does not stop you getting your ECID value or signed iBEC/iBSS but iTunes 8.2.1 does make it more difficult.

Current recommendation for 3GS owners who have not yet saved their signed iBEC/iBSS is to restore 3.0.1 with iTunes 8.2 capture the signed iBEC/iBSS and then jailbreak with redsn0w.

As long as you have your ECID signed iBEC/iBSS a subsequent jailbreak of 3.1 should be possible.

DFU restore of official apple firmware will remove all traces of jailbreak and ultrasn0w unlock (but not 2G unlock). However you should set your phone up as a new iPhone in iTunes to avoid any traces of the jailbroken filesystem being resynced to the iPhone from a previous backup.

Thanks for the reply Olethros, your response is much appreciated. I do have one more question that came up after looking around last night. I noticed some referances that after you do a DFU restore there is a common problem when iTunes goes to activate the iPhone it will get a error 1600 i belive it was or another error code and the only way around this is to what I belive is called Hacktivate using RedSn0w. Is this correct?

If this is correct does that mean you lose push ability since it didnt activate using apple servers? I am sorry if I am compleatly wrong about this but I just noticed some referances to hacktivating and not having push ablity. I am not sure if this is only for first time activations or if it happens when ever you hacktivate.

    Again thanks for the respose

I have personally done both DFU and recovery mode restores on a factory unlocked 3GS to generate the signed iBEC and iBSS files without errors, there is a good guide for this on iClarified for both windows and mac.

Error 1600 is usually fixed by deleting the contents of a particular directory and making sure that your user can write to this directory. In my experience this problem is more common with pwnage tool.

    Code:
    vista: c:/users/username/appdata/roaming/%APP%/ITUNES/DEVICE Support
    XP: C:/Documents and Settings/username/Application Data/Apple Computer/iTunes/Device Support
    mac: ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support
(Where username is your login-user name)
Other errors are usually resolved by making sure you restarted after installing iTunes, trying a different USB port, USB cable and sometimes even a different machine.

If your iPhone is being used with an official SIM / contract redsn0w will not hacktivate. This is auto-detected by redsn0w during jailbreak so make sure you have the SIM card you normally use in your phone during jailbreak.

Hactivated phones do lose push activation, there is no 100% workaround for this and unless Apple play nice it is unlikely a proper solution will arrive.

I mean iTunes 8.2 - you can find old windows versions here: Old Version of iTunes Download - OldApps.com

Thanks Olethros! I followed your instructions and generated both the iBSS and iBEC files using 8.2.0. I was expecting to see iTunes tell me it was authenticating with apple like I have seen in a few videos but didnt notice that. It should still be fine though right?

Again thanks again, just need to jail break now!
