    Default problems upgrading to 4.0.1?

OK, I used purplera1n to JB my 3Gs back when it was OS 3.0, then i upgraded through iTunes and used Spirit to JB 3.1.3. Now I'm ready to go to 4.0.1 and use JBme

    My Cydia shows 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1

I've downloaded the 4.0.1 ISPW, edited the HOSTS file, Shift+Restore, and get an error that it's not eligible for the upgrade error 13. If I go into DFU mode I get error 3014.

Would I be better off just upgrading fully through iTunes and then jailbreaking 4.2.# if i'm not worried about unlocking??

So.. a new thread with no mention of piracy - and you hope we might have such short memories.. I really do hope you reconsider your pirating behaviour - some pirated iOS software has been demonstrated to include malware.

Your problem is embarrassingly obvious/simple. Your iTunes version is too old to restore iOS 4.x (error 13) and also you might not have edited your hosts file properly (or have a firewall or similar blocking internet access during the restore - error 3014)

    I appreciate your help sir.

I do buy worthwhile apps but I do like having the choice to (if available) try out an app before buying it. I think you will agree that you search for an app/utility, you will find TONS of similar apps. That is one great thing about the AppMarket for Android.

I see your point about try before you buy BUT that does not serve as a justification for Piracy. Piracy is BAD BAD BAD.

Appstore has ratings / reviews system in place, you can certainly read those before buying. Even so, most apps are dirt cheap.

Yes, I see both sides of the issue. But I started at the beginning buying lots of .99 apps and have to get 3-4 to find one that was made well. Wish Apple would follow AppMarket's ideas.

Now another question. Is there anything I should do to prepare to update to 4.2.# on itunes and try to JB from there? (if i can find an untethered JB)

Was I correct in saying after 4.0.1 the baseband gets updated which only effects the unlocking ability? I say this b/c 4.2 has some cool features

Do not update to 4.2.1 and stuck with a tethered jailbreak.
4.2.1 does nothing for you at this point other than pain and headaches.
The most important thing is to understand SHSH hash and save them.

4.0 to 4.0.1 ==> no baseband update, just a fix for signal bar (i think)
4.0.2 ==> no baseband update, just a fix for pdf exploit (no more jailbreakme)
4.1 ==> baseband update, close the previous jailbreakme.
4.2.1 ==> baseband update, close previous userland untether exploit in tools such as limera1n, greenpois0n, redsn0w.

This really is up to the developer, Apple has put in place the infrastructure to allow free/trial versions that can be updated via in-app purchase to the full version.

As I said earlier, you cannot trust pirated versions to not have included additional code (spyware, malware).

There's a lot to be said about using your discretion before purchasing. Look at the screenshots, read the description, read the reviews - google for reviews outside of the app store.

I wouldn't buy it if the developer hasn't bothered to put the effort in with screenshots and description or if it hasn't been updated (to fix bugs or add new features) since it was originally put on the app store.

This cannot be understated -- keep in mind right now that we're about 4 days from when security researchers identified one of the first Android viruses, which accesses all of the personal data on your phone and stores it remotely on an unrelated party's server -- and the only way it gets installed is when people add illicit Android sources and download cracked packages.

That said, I agree entirely that Apple needs to take a more pro-active approach in this. Windows Phone 7 has a great way to time limit full applications, meaning that a demo can be the same code as the original and that a license alone is what dictates whether you can use it. This way the developer doesn't have to write two separate applications in order to have a demo available. Aside from that, I've been burned having bought some pretty terrible apps as well, based on either reviews (that were incorrect or suspect) or ratings (that I definitely didn't agree with), so it would be great for Apple to take a page from some of their competition and force developers to provide time limited copies of their software if doing so would not arbitrarily reduce the value of their software.

That said, something we all (should have) learned as children still applies -- two wrong's don't make a right.
