(not safe - do not attempt) Fixing 3GS stuck in recovery/DFU mode!!!

Hi guys, for any of you tried to use spirit2pwn or blackrain or wtever reason ur iphone 3gs turned into a brick, here's my solution after researching a whole day on the internet and trying to restore my iphone for like million times!!!

!!!!!PLEASE FINISH READING THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU DO IT!!!!!!

Here's the solution (NOTE!! tht this won't bring ur jailbroken os back but at least it turns ur iphone back to a PHONE!)

1. connect ur iphone to a mac.
2. wait till it pops up the restore message, then click restore(offical restore)
3. click restore and update
4. wait till it finished downloading the ios4
5. when it shows "Extract software for update", unplug ur cable
6. when it shows "Verifying iphone....", plug the cable back
7. now ur iphone should flash once and the apple logo should pop up!!
8. wait till the restore finishes.

I know this is not a very helpful method coz it restores ur iphone to the latest OS but then I was so frustrated coz i wasnt able to use my iphone at all since it's stuck in dfu mode.... well at least now i could use it as a phone....

Do not do this. It is definitely not recommended and you risk bricking your baseband permanantly.

I wouldn't do it again if i had a choice but then it actually helped me get out of the dfu status and restore the latest ios4.0.1... and it's now working perfectly...

I mean I'm not sure about the risk of doing this but it actually works... I'm just posting this in case anyone is in the same situation like me...

Seriously - musclenerd has straight out said that yanking the cable during restore is one of the few ways to brick (no recovery possible) your baseband. The timing has to be 100% right - for it to work. He jumped on postings at ih8sn0w's forums recommending a similar process.

If possible it is better to remove key files from the IPSW (as per last-ditch method to 3.1.3 for example) so that the restore fails at the right stage. However - now there is no 3.1.3 SHSH signing and I don't believe that the remove LLB technique works with iOS 4.0.x

Please don't advocate this technique - it has too high risks.

Also, your description mixes DFU and recovery mode as if the solutions are the same for both. They are not!

Recovery mode can be exploited (depending on what version the iBoot in NOR is) via various tools that can help kick the iPhone out of recovery mode or send payloads to fix the problem causing the iPhone to be stuck in recovery mode.

If you are truly stuck in DFU mode then this means your NOR is corrupted - you can only restore with valid SHSH in that scenario - which means ONLY original Apple IPSW - the most you can do is delete or rename a file inside the IPSW (as per the last-ditch technique). This means no exploits or custom payloads are possible.

my situation was I can't restore my iphone even I pressed the restore button without holding down the option key on iTune... it popped up a window saying restore and update which was the 4.0.1 lastest ios.... after that it shows an error message... why's tht happening?...
