can we get a sticky on the latest status of users on how they get this thing called ECID.
I don't know much about it.
I have an OTB 3.0.x that was bought a long time ago. Can I still get the ECID? or do I have to ping the apple servers somehow and that is now closed?

The ECID is built into your iPhone, you can always get this by putting your iPhone into DFU mode
What you can't get now is a SHSH bundle signed with your unique ECID for OS 3.0 or OS 3.0.1 because Apple stopped issuing these after 3.1 was released.
I would guess that 3.2 will be out soon (last year 2.2 was released at the end of November) and then you will be unable to get SHSH bundles for 3.1 and 3.1.2
Use the firmware umbrella to backup the ECID SHSH for each iPhone OS release, it might be the fastest way to a jailbreak under OS 3.2 or higher.

You do not need USBView to get the ECID on windows.
- Put the 3GS in recovery mode (or DFU mode) and make sure it is recognised by your windows machine.
- Start device manager (run devmgmt.msc)
- Open up Universal Serial Bus Controllers
- Double click on Apple Mobile Device USB driver
- Go to the details tab
- Select the Device Instance Path property
- Scroll across until you see ECID: the following 16 characters - until the underscore are your ECID. (you can copy this whole string into a text editor)
- Simply hold down sleep/power and home buttons until the 3GS restarts to get it out of recovery mode.
man, I haven't started messing around with this stuff yet, but it seems confusing.
I haven't JB or UL my Iphone 3GS on 3.0.0 yet and I'm doing that tonight with the Pwnage Tool.
Is there anything I need to know?
Can I use the latest version of Itunes? (I'm still on 8.0.2)
Oh, btw, I'm on OS10.4.11 (tiger) ... is that a problem for pwnage tool? Please tell me it is not leopard or snow lepoard only...

yes you can update itunes to 9.0.2, i dont exactly know if pwnagetool will work in os tiger but you might aswell download pwnagetool and try to run it to see if tiger supports it, if not then upgrade to leopard
Firstly you must be on at least iTunes 8.2 if you are running iPhoneOS 3.0 not 8.0.2 like you said. iTunes 8.2 is the first version to support iPhoneOS 3.0Quote:

Thirdly, iTunes 9.0.2 will work for you but you don't have to upgrade to that version of iTunes if you don't want to. You can stay with 8.2 if you want.
