Well, isn't the camera app compiled in the same way (except for the Thumb2 instruction set for the 3GS, which is probably an option for the entire compilation and not for each app) on all models? I though the app itself checked what module was installed (Apple software usually works this way). If your camera is broken and you have 10 bucks and a bit of time to spare I think you should give it a go.
I have one installed right now, just finished about 10 minutes ago. When going to the camera app the iris simply never opens so camera and video are not available.
I would gladly be a guinea pig if someone has any suggestions for drivers, from the sound of what was said earlier there are not separate camera drivers that can be extracted and used. Has anyone really looked?
also....there are lots of other 3rd party video and camera apps, I wonder to what level they are coded themselves, or if most of the functions are calling directly from the OS using an API.
I am also jailbroken, and tried cycorder which immediately crashes.
Anything in the app store that uses hardware must go through official APIs (previously some managed to sneak a few private APIs in but this is becoming harder to do now) so the hardware is abstracted by Apple into a standard API.
You would need to patch the device tree to recognise and initialize the 3GS type of camera module. Then maybe patch the driver to support it.
loreak, did you physically put the 3GS camera sensor into a 3G? How did you modify the connector? It's not exactly the same, is it? I thought about experimenting the same, so if you did, let me know.
That the iris won't open is the same as not having a camera sensor installed. Try the mod below. Some guy modify the software so the autofocus works on 3G even without the new autofocus sensor. Let me know if it works for you.

I have bought a 3gs camera and the housing is different and will not fit, it could possibly be made to fit by removing the holder from the iphone but i didn't try it.:(
