3GS & Jailbreaking

As the new untethered jailbreaks are currently more important to 3GS owners, I figured this is a good place to post this:

- 1st there is a userland jailbreak "spirit" which was due to be released very soon (according to p0sixninja).

- At the same time there is an iBoot exploit, but everyone wants to keep it hidden until the next major hardware release.

- Then suddenly geohot discovers another exploit and according to p0sixninja, it will delay the release of spirit. (for unknown reasons).

So now we have 3 exploits. 2 of them actually work on the ipad too (as demonstrated by MuscleNerd and later by GeoHot).

And at the end a promise from p0sixninja of a release of the userland jailbreak soon. (in his blog he mentions end of the month) and on twitter he is making several suggestions to hold on to 3.1.3 as the release is coming soon.

The only thing i fail to understand, is why geohot's new explot will delay the release of spirit:

Right now, especially on the 3GS and newer iBoot exploits are the most useful for those making jailbreaks. This is explained in the blog posting. So keeping an iBoot exploit secret is a very good idea.

Spirit is easily patched - also ideal material for a public jailbreak as it does not waste a low level iboot exploit

Maybe geohot's exploit is via safari, so can enable the simplicity of a web based jailbreak. Either that or the technical side is much more elegant or reveals less to Apple.

Anyway, the advice is still the same - get a SHSH for 3.1.3 as soon as possible. Unlock will not be released until new hardware is released.

I think you are doing chronic dev an injustice by being so hard on this team.

They have contributed to previous jailbreaks (they played a part in 24kpwn - as part of a hybrid team with members from the iPhone dev team)

Also for jailbreaks currently in active development. They have worked with other teams again to help the entire jailbreak community.

If greenpoison was released now, it would only contain a very optimised (fast and stable) version of the 3.1.2 jailbreak already implemented in redsn0w and blackra1n. It would be completely irresponsible to release a jailbreak based on a new exploit right now.

It is very much the wrong time to release a jailbreak (with iPhone OS 4.0 in early beta - any jailbreaks could be fixed before 4.0 is generally available)

At this point greenpoison is of more use to the people making the jailbreaks. So the lack of release to the public does not mean that this tool is not already being used to help find, develop and refine new jailbreaks. Eventually (after 4.0) a version of greenpoison might find it's way to the general public as a flexible jailbreak tool.

Having said all of that, I do agree with your original point that you should only donate after a product has been released and you have found it works for you. That is the only way to protect yourself as a consumer.

Chronic is a straight shooter and I found him to be trustworthy.

Chronic and I communicate privately many times and I can say that Chronic IS NOT devious. Chronic genuinely helped me in the past with my questions.
