Is it possible to select specific cell?
I was thinking about jailbreaking my iPhone 3GS (probably old boot rom) but only if I could do the things I want, which is specifically the ability so select specific cell towers in my area and connect to them.
Is there any app out there that could show me all available cell towers (I know about the field test mode ... for the beginning nice, but not exactly what I expected) and let me connect to each manually?
The reason is, I'm in a location, where there is very weak 3G (I read BossPrefs is able to force 3G ...? Would be nice aswell) and no EDGE (at least the strongest tower doesn't have EDGE), so I basically end up with GPRS. However, a neighboring tower has EDGE, but I don't get connected to it automatically (perhaps because it is not supposed to serve my region ), so I would like to force it somehow.
Any ideas on this?
I'm not aware of one right now -- Blackberries have had this for a good long while and I've always been curious as to why the iPhone doesn't have a mechanism or application to do this... As you mentioned, Field Test mode is useful, but doesn't give you what you're looking for...
Did a pretty broad search around the usual places and I can't find a single app that really provides this level of functionality... If you're a developing kind of person, you would probably have the market cornered if you wrote one for Cydia.
EDIT: Also, SBSettings does allow you to selectively toggle 3G and EDGE -- so you could at bare minimum force yourself to connect via one of those two as opposed to letting it switch automatically. Historically this has worked fairly well for me -- I've got a bad 3G tower near me and it broadcasts 5 bars of absolutely no data and voice service. Reported it on 'Mark the Spot' like 30 times since the app was added, still doesn't work. I use the SBSettings toggle to ensure I'm on EDGE here so that I don't wander onto the bad 3G leg... Not identical to what you're doing but it does give more granular control over your connections than you'd get with just the iPhone itself and Field Test mode.

That's bad news. Anyway, thanks for doing some research.
