Default Is it possible to buy a locked to AT&T iphone 3GS without signing a contract?

    Hello all,

I plan on going to the US the next month, and as I come from europe, buying the iphone for 599$, as unsubsised, would be a greate deal back in euros.

I know the iphone isnt unlockable yet but im confident the dev team will achieve it, so I would like to know if I can just walk into a Apple store in New York and buy a 3GS without signing anything?

The 3GS goes on sale unlocked tomorow here in belgium for 575 euros, thats a bit more than 800$ at the curent exchange rate.....

TOO LONG/DIDNT READ: Can you buy a iphone without getting any kind of contract wth AT&T in the US?

    Thanks ^^

I bought my 3GS from an Apple Store in Southern California. They required pre-approval from ATT before selling me the iPhone. The pre-approval process also determined which price I paid, whether I got one at the fully subsidized price or not. They passed around MacBook Airs so people could get pre-approved while waiting in line, if they hadn't already done it on-line at home (through the Apple website). They didn't let customers walk out of the store with their new iPhone until the activation process had been initiated. In my case, activation was instantaneous after they put in my sim.

Based on my experience, I doubt you'll be able to walk in and buy one without an ATT contract from Apple.

    Good luck.

I bought my 3GS on release day at an AT&T store in southern Maine, and they were offering the full range of 2 year, 1 year, and no contract options. I suspect they might force you to at least start a plan with them (to collect the extortion I mean activation fee, of course), but that shouldn't prevent cancellation before the plan bills you. Definitely try an AT&T store if the Apple clowns won't play ball.

On the other hand (though I may be mis-remembering this), if you're planning on taking it back to Europe to use I think there will be problems having to do with different frequency bands being used for data.

    Thanks for the answers!

It coroborates what the AT&T website says, you have to take a 2 years contract to buy a 3GS, that really sucks, im gona get raped by 145 euros when buying my iphone over here...

If somone knows some shady trick to bypass the evil AT&T contract demons, feel free to contribute =)

Go to any apple store and ask for the NO COMMITMENT IPHONE. You will pay $499, $599 and $699. 8gb, 16gb and 32gb respectively. No hassle, no commitments, no AT&T!!!!

is there such thing? because i know ATT doesn't do it for sure. but i never tried apple. Last time I called for the 3G they didn't offer this.. until they anonunced it about people can buy it without a plan but it was still ridclious.

and no matter the less, I still think its to new for them to sell it without contract or else EVERYONE will be doing it. and ATT won't be making money either.

Yes, this is true. The unsubsidized price is steep, but hey, I would rather pay upfront than get stock with AT&T for 2 years.

but there no point if you live in us, and you use it on tmobile.

whats the point of having the phone when your going to be on crappy edge on tmobile? its ridiclious slow! I have stressed enough from that slow piece of shit.

Unless the phone was also capable for 3G tmobile network than I would "think" its worth buying it off the price.

But for now, the network 3G only works for ATT and I live in a open city so I have 3G network not edge on ATT and its pretty fast.
I get about 1.8MB download almost 2 MB and about 128+ upload. but however, its better than edge 40k download -_-

Even though their ridclious price is sometimes high, but hey! you are using the phone right? use the full potential of it.
contract or not, I rather use the 3G ATT network anyday.. even if it cost more.

EDGE offers 150-220 Kbps, not 40 (which is typical of GPRS). If you have T-MobileWeb, you're paying $6/month instead of $30 for 3G on T-Mobile. If I used a 3GS on T-Mobile, I'd be saving over $400/year.

i'm on tmobile and i pay $60 for my voice plan minutes plus a 5.99 for tzones

the tzones cost me 5.99 per month and over 12 months thats $72
if i use the $30 data plan thats $360 a year

simple fact for me, i can not jsutify paying 60+30 for a data plan thats half the cost of my voice plan to me thats highway robbery
i dont use the data that much. its mostly a cell fone for me. if i need to check or do an email i use my tzones, i pay 5.99 per month and simply jailbreak and do the tzones hack thing and that gives me internet access. its not at 3g speeds but for me i dont need that speed. its just as fast sending an email on tzones as it is on 3g, i've compared them side by side with a friend. surfing the web is faster on 3g but if i want to surf the web i do it from a wifi spot or on a PC

the whole point of me buying a contract free iphone is because in the long run i actually save money, i dont need to pay extra for things i wont take full advantage of, data wise the tzones thing has worked perfect for me,.
