I am quite a tech noob, but I have been reading alot about the Iphone 3gs and hacking before I buy, but I have a few questions if you guys could help me out with.

1. I am looking to buy an Iphone 3gs Factory unlocked from ebay. Does the factory unlock affect Jail Breaking?

2. I have been trying to understanding Jailbreaking, what exactly is baseband and bootloader, and how does this affect my jailbreaking if I purchase a brand new iphone 3gs factory unlocked?

3. Lastly, how do I know the iphone 3gs I buy is not stolen, or fake?

4. How do I know what firmware my iphone 3gs will come in?

The only thing you need to worry about if you purchase factory unlocked is that your bootrom is of the old or new type. If it is of the new type you have a tethered jailbreak. Ask the seller for the serial number (if the phone is unopened in it's box). Otherwise if the phone is not unopened, ask the seller to actually confirm the bootrom version.

Ask the seller for the serial number (if the phone is unopened in it's box). The serial number indicates the year (3rd digit) and week of manufacture (4th and 5th digit). Then look at the dates for the release of each iPhone OS. Phones made before september 2009 will likely come with 3.0. Phones manufactured in 2010 might come with 3.1.3

Otherwise if the phone is not unopened, ask the seller to actually confirm the OS version.
