Default old 3Gs purchase in Singapore

A friend of mine is travelling to Singapore in a few days and would like to purchase a 3Gs from there to be able to unlock it in Iran. I told him to look at the serial number and if it was older than week 45 it is ok to purchase. I want to be sure I have gave him a correct advice? Am I correct or he should check iBoot and bootrom too?

The year number is also important - this is the 3rd digit in the serial number.

So you need to look for a serial that is XX945 or lower
if it is XX020 that means it was made in 2010

All 3GS iPhones that were made before last week 45 2009 are likely already sold so I would not get your hopes up.

The iBoot/bootrom cannot be checked without taking the iPhone out of it's packaging/box and turning it on. It is the only 100% reliable option.

There are ways to jailbreak (Spirit JB) without the tethered jailbreak. This requires an iPhone on a legitimate plan or a factory unlocked iPhone.

As your friend is going to Singapore, I would recommend you try and buy a factory unlocked 3GS iPhone (or even better wait for the new iPhone to be released later today, this will drop the prices on the 3GS by at least US$100)

If you get officially unlocked, it is really not a problem to have the new bootrom. Spirit jailbreak will work - no tethered jailbreak.
