I wanted to know what exactly does "activating" the phone do, because i went into apple store, and i can buy a 3gs 16b for full 600$, however they say phone will not work because it needs to be activated. I am a tmobile customer, so my question is; do i need to buy att and "activate" the phone in order to jailbreak then unlock to use with tmobile?

no you can just jailbreak with redsn0w and it will activate and jailbreak your iphone. then you can use ultrasn0w to unlock the phone
