Default newb yelling: i need help

This was a post from someone else that got removed:

Hi, I have an iPhone 3GS (OS 3.1.2) that was jailbroken about 6months ago using BlackRa1n.

I have been using it ever since without any problems, until yesterday. Just after the recent Rock update (and also some other contents included) I did a soft-reboot through Rock (the one that automatically starts after major updates) and everything worked fine. I then wanted to do a manual reboot a couple of minutes later (after updating appulous and noticing it did not work, which I later found out to be because of the service being shutdown). The iPhone turned off normally without any problems but when I tried to start it, it just turns itself off after about 8-10seconds of start-up.

I have no real clue what might have caused this problem, and I would like to ask for different ways of managing this problem. I would obviously prefer to fix it without losing applications, contacts and all the other data (my backup is about 4months old and I currently do not have access to it). I have also tried charging it during startup, but the start still aborts.

How do I fix the phone?
    Best regards, Faithless

my situation isnt quite the same, i didnt mess around with appulous, i just did the upgrades through cydia, and as a newb i did use some rock apps (all of which were available on cydia, rock just seemed to dl faster for me) after the last few updates (using both install programs) some of my programs stopped working and being available, now after rebooting it normally it locks in the lil apple boot screen than just turns off... any trick to bypassing this screen and doing a general restore on 3.1.2?

    * i would appreciate any "i told you so's" being left to pm's or just kept to yourself, all im concerned with now is fixing the problem, i am already researching how not to do it again. Thanks again for all the input, hope ya'll can help!

The i told you so part is "don't use two package management tools on the same phone - in your case rock and cydia"

3GS - Old bootrom or new?
Do you have a SHSH for OS 3.1.2?

    Did you use blacksn0w unlock?
The most common cause for the applelogo bootloop are blacksn0w (timing bug that prevents boot) . The blacksn0w bug can be fixed as outlined in this post http://www.hackint0sh.org/f220/124913.htm it's worth a try as a start if you use blacksn0w

Another cause is a bug in a support library used by Cydia (and probably rock also) a fixed version of library is supposedly available.

Other causes can be packages that incorrectly modify the system and leave it in an unstable state. These generally don't get fixed, it's easier to reinstall as there is no easy way to access the filesystem of a phone in this state and troubleshoot. (unless you make jailbreaks for a living or work in forensics)

I used blackra1n on 3.1.2 i dont know if i have SHSH (or what it stands for.. im not a big techy), i probably do have it if its something thats recommended, because i did a ton of research on what was necessary, but i cant name off every package or update i put on... i've had the phone about 5 months.

and if whatever your saying for the file system is f'd than my best bet is to somehow get the phone in recovery mode and reformat it?

and if so aside from apples suggestion how would i get it into recovery mode... im stuck at the lil apple logo for like 8 seconds than poof blank screen and nothing... AWESOME!

    * its worth noting that i am w/ at&t so i didnt modify my baseband or use an pwnage tool or anything to open it for other networks

SHSH is not a package you install.

The SHSH is a unique key that apple makes and sends you each time you restore your OS on a 3GS.

Problem is Apple has stopped making these keys for all old OS versions. So you are limited to restoring to 3.1.3 if you don't have and older OS key backed up. There is a link in Cydia - 'make my life easier' that u should click on. Or you can use the firmware umbrella which does not even require that you are jailbroken to save a key for a specific OS.

Was your previous jailbreak 'tethered'? In other words did you need to run blackra1n every time you restarted your phone?

There is a sticky which explains how to get into DFU or recovery mode.

If you do not rely on an unlock for your iphone why not use DFU as mentioned and upgrade to 3.1.3 using iTunes (you will lose your JB and stuff) and then JB with 'Spirit' and once you are ready, start your modifications from scratch. Vanilla AT&T means you don't need to worry about upgrading your firmware. Best of luck.
if you cant find DFU here try iclarified tutorials )

theres a 3.1.3 jb now? i thought that the os wasnt broke because the exploit was being saved for the next big release?

i see lots of stickies here but i understand very lil of them or even what i should be looking for... i know just enough to be dangerous as i have well proven, and im pretty damned ignorant just to summarize.

http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/54082.htm is the sticky that explains recovery and DFU mode.

Be aware that DFU mode will only allow original IPSW with a corresponding SHSH on 3GS iPhones.

You can check what SHSH you have saved with The Firmware Umbrella - the latest beta version now has one-button automatic operation but only works with iTunes 9.1 not iTunes 9.1.1

Recovery mode on 3GS will allow either original IPSW with SHSH or if the 3GS is old bootrom you can use custom IPSW created with PwnageTool/xpwn or the unsupported here Sn0wbreeze.

New bootrom iPhones were tethered jailbreak (with redsn0w or blackra1n). Spirit offers untethered jailbreak for all devices.

yes there is a jailbreak for 3.1.3 now - Spirit - it has some limitations (most of which don't impact you as you are on a legitimate contract).

See http://www.hackint0sh.org/f247/127632.htm for more information on Spirit.

NOTE: Spirit requires that you restore your phone to non jailbroken state (to 3.1.2 if possible or 3.1.3) and activate it with iTunes before you jailbreak.
