Smile just got a factory 3.1 iphone 3GS... what next?!?

I just got a white iphone 16gb 3GS with factory loaded 3.1 firmware on there, and used umbrella and tinytss to get the blob file as instructed on this site and got the 3.1 blob file. What can I do with this file and is there anyway I can jailbreak it or what is the purpose of getting this 3.1 blob file?

the iphone right now is using official at&t sim card and service but it has none of my contacts or anything on there now. However I do have a previous back up of the original of my previous iphone data on my iphone 2g. This phone is activated under my friend's number and service, now my question is can I restore that previous back up data from my iphone 2g to this new 3gs without having to get it activated again?

If you got your device with 3.1 on it, all you can do is wait for the redsn0w for 3.1 to be released. It is not possible to jailbreak a 3G[S] on 3.1 yet, even if you have the SHSH blobs, or even if you had your .iBEC, .iBSS, and ECID.

In regards to getting the data off of the old iPhone, the easiest way to get the contacts off will be to take the old iPhone, sync it to your computer and make it sync with one of the contact programs (Outlook, Windows Contacts, Apple Mail, etc.) That way the contacts will be on your machine and will automatically sync to the new machine. Secondarily, you _CAN_ force the program to restore the new 3G[S] as a backup from a 3G iPhone, and possibly from a 2G iPhone as well -- but if the backup was made with pre-3.0 software, you'd probably want to use the contact sync method. Restoring from backup should not affect the number that the phone is attempting to activate on -- when I got my 3G[S] I had to activate it on the new number before I could do anything with it, and after I restored from my 3G backup it again told me Activation was Successful. With that said -- there have been issues people have reported in relation to general usability of the 3.0/3.1 OS after coming from a restore from pre-3.0 -- there have been data hiccups, battery life problems, etc. It is strongly recommended that you do a manual sync vs. restoring from backup unless you absolutely MUST have all of the data / network data / SMS history / call history / etc.

    Sorry!

the new iphone i have in my hand right now was activated with my friend's number so i took that sim off and put my sim in because it is both att.... the previous back up was done with the firmware 3.0.1 or 3.0 either one of them on my 2G iphone....

I did not sync it with any contacts program so is there anyway that if i click the restore from previous back up that it would keep my phone still activated with my number and not mess with anything else or should i rather wait? cause i just really want to get my contacts in beside having to manually enter in like 100+ entries on the phone itself

Restoring should not threaten your activation as you are legitimately activated. If you start experiencing battery life issues after the restore, sync your contacts, restore back to 3.1 and set up as a new iPhone -- that will resolve almost every currently recorded problem that can be experienced during a phone ugprade.

This would be a notable discrepancy -- the reports were that people would be getting 12-15 hours out of their iPhone, they do a restore from their previous one, and they start getting 4-6 hours. Wouldn't be something you could miss.

I'm not trying to talk you out of doing it -- just want you to know what to do if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones who sees problems after having done so. Also not trying to make you think there's a high percentage chance that you WILL see problems -- there's no way of knowing
