    Default Jailbreak - completely lost...

    Greetings all.

Now, I realize that this has probably been asked a million times, but after reading hundreds of sites (and forum posts) and realizing there are numerous possibilities and combinations I haven't got a clue if it is possible to Jailbreak my iPhone.

So, I've gathered as much information as I could, and I hope someone a lot smarter and experienced then me will be able to explain if there is any way to Jailbreak my iPhone. (Main reason for jail-breaking is actually being able to use VEENCY).

    Ok, so here goes.

    iPhone 3GS.
    Bootrom : iBoot-359.3
    Firmware version 3.1.3 (7E18)
    Model: MC134NF
    Modem Firmware: 05.12.01
    Carrier: Carrier 5.1

I am situated in Belgium, using Mobile Vikings

So, with all this info. "can I Jailbreak?" And what steps, tools, tutorials and what not should I use... There's blackrain, purplesnow, Dev team, pwngetool and I've got NO clue what will or will not work....

    Thanks!

The good news is the 359.3 iBoot is vulnerable to the 24kpwn exploit -- however, if you don't have an SHSH on file with Cydia or from TinyTSS / Firmware Umbrella, you may not be able to jailbreak or unlock until 3.2 because of the SHSH hashing.

The 3GS does signature hash checking during the firmware flashing process and Apple only provides signatures for the latest version of the firmware. This means that at present, you can only legitimately flash to 3.1.3 using their mechanism and all other flashes will get an error.

Previously pwned phones can use pwnagetool created pwned 3.1.3 firmwares that bypass the SHSH check on flash, but I do not know whether you would be able to apply a pwned 3.1.3 image to your existing 3.1.3 phone. I do not believe this is currently possible as the Dev-Team has info on their site stating clearly: "Donít use PwnageTool on the iPhone 3GS if youíre at 3.1.3, it just wonít work." This doesn't seem to bode well for your current situation

In relation to which tools to use, it is strongly recommend to only use the dev team's tools -- at this point it's PwnageTool 3.1.5. There are other methods to jailbreak, but quite frankly none of them are as robust and complete as the PwnageTool, nor are they as secure -- PwnageTool is the only safe way to upgrade your phone without upgrading your baseband and is historically the most reliable and full featured program available to do the jailbreaking. Sure, it involves pwning a firmware file and doing a full flash of the phone, but ultimately, it ends up working much much better. I know that I just told you to use a tool that I also just told you I didn't think would work -- and I'm not suggesting you attempt to use PwnageTool on your 3.1.3 -- it won't work. Just that when Dev Team releases PwnageTool for 3.2, then you should use it vs. any of the competition.

Ultimately, I do not believe you can currently jailbreak your phone -- unless you're already running an exploited boot loader, but I do not believe you are...

Yup... that phone cannot be jailbroken and unlock at the moment.
The best thing you can do for yourself now is to save your 3.1.3 shsh by using firmware umbrella.

Hopefully, sometimes in the future your phone can be jailbroken.
The good thing is you have an old bootrom.

I recommend iclarified.com for all your jailbreaking and unlocking tutorial needs

    > "can I Jailbreak?"

according to the following tutorial, Yes

"This tutorial will show you how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS using PwnageTool for Mac. PwnageTool now supports the latest 3.1.3 firmware."

    Jon,
if you read carefully, pwnagetool 3.1.5 supports firmware 3.1.3 ... meaning that it can create custom firmware 3.1.3.
Here's the quote from Dev Team Blog:

If you have an iPhone 3GS: PwnageTool works if you’re currently at version 3.1.2 or below (down to 3.0) and if you know you have a old bootrom. You don’t need to be already jailbroken — PwnageTool will ask you if you’re jailbroken after you’ve created the IPSW. Don’t use PwnageTool unless you know for sure you have an old bootrom (if you’re not sure, assume the worst and don’t use it). Don’t use PwnageTool on the iPhone 3GS if you’re at 3.1.3, it just won’t work. Downgrade to 3.1.2 using the methods described here. If you can’t downgrade because you don’t have your 3GS 3.1.2 hashes on file with Cydia, you’ll need to sit out the 3.1.3 jailbreak.
If you want to jailbreak using pwnagetool, then you have to downgrade to 3.1.2 provided you have your shsh.
But if you have your shsh and you can restore back to firmware 3.1.2, you can easily use redsn0w to jailbreak instead of pwnagetool (if you don't have a mac)
