For those of us wondering if OTB FW 3.1 can be unlocked, the answer is still NO

I was on Tmobile with my iPhone, but, I'm one of the people that updated to FW3.1, by mistake

Now that Im on ATT with my 3GS, I dont have to fear any software updates, and my phone works in places Tmobile had no reception, and ATT 3G internet is 300% faster than Tmobile Edge.. and I pay $40 more per month :-(

just jailbreak would be nice
in Europe tho' almost all carries give iPhone for free or just 100$ with contract

Why wrong? On O2 it is free if the tarif is right.

your post has nothing to do with the topic of this thread, you are hijacking it. please start your own thread about phone costs...

this thread is about UNLOCKING being NOT available to OTB FW 3.1 iPhones, and also for any iPhone that was updated to stock Apple issued FW3.1 (not talking about pwned FW3.0 here)

It makes no difference how much the phone costs, you cannot unlock it.

Geohot is working on a Jailbreak, but NOT on an unlock.

So, the point of this post is to answer all the people asking, when will I be able to unlock FW 3.1.x..

As Confuscious has said so many times, NEVER..

so, whats so hot about DevTeam, ChronicTeam, Geohot, blackra1n, greenp0ison, PwnageTool, NONE of them UNLOCK FW 3.1.. No matter how much you pay for the phone..

now please post here when I am wrong, and there IS an unlock for FW3.1.. Unlock, not just Jailbreak..

Wrong because this post is not about cell plans/cost of phone.
What in the post before yours (from OP) didn't you get?

As of now, and this is after geohot's release of blackra1n, here is the status

1. There is NO UNLOCK for FW 3.1.x (meaning you can NOT use your iPhone with unofficial carrier)

2. Thre is NO hacktivation with blackra1n (meaning, once you run blackra1n, unless you insert a valid SIM from an official carrier, your phone will be in emergency calls only mode.)

3. blackra1n does NOT work on a macintosh, nor on a mac running Virtual PC.

bottom line status of iPhones running official FW 3.1.x
1. NOT UNLOCKABLE, if you dont believe me, ask Confuscious
2. NO Hacktivation
3. NO macintosh Jailbreak

Please post in this thread if anything I said in this post is incorrect.

Please do not post in this thread to hijack it and talk about phone pricing.

Jon, you are right, your statement is so clear and absolutly correct.

I feel, some guys want to tell "he/she don't need an unlock function becasue he/she use the officail carrier".

So, please don't be hyper.. ^^

acutally, I am using 3GS
and, I am waiting the unlock solution for new baseband.
Because I want to use my phone when I go to overeas with cheaper fee than roaming service of ATT.

Specially, I don't like to use the customized firmware even it is useful to avoid the upgrading of baseband. but, I have kept the customized firmware for the emergency situation such as when I need to resore by the trouble of my phone.

I just hope Geohot or Dev-team find and release the new unlock software for the new baseband.

Update, blackra1n for the mac has been released, so you can now run it from a mac.

Still no unlock for 3.1! That said, I wouldn't say it will *never* happen, there are already rumors of an exploit in the new baseband code which is promising if they can find a working injection method. I doubt we'll see one soon (it took a loooooooooong time before the 3G was unlocked, I expect similar for the 3GS), but I wouldn't give up hope.

At this point, every new 3GS comes with 3.1 and the new baseband (and possibly the new iBoot) -- as always, the dev-team, ChronicDev, Geohot, et. al. want their jailbreaks and unlocks to be as widely usable as possible -- I feel it's only a matter of time before they have worked their magic once again on the current baseband.
