Default Irish bought phone in the UK

Due to stock issues where i live in the UK i am considering getting my Irish friend to buy me a 3GS from his local O2 shop which has stock available.

He will buy it tied in with an O2 payg tariff and ship it over to me.

So my question is if i was to just throw away the Irish sim and put in my UKO2 sim would it just work straight out of the box?

and also is there no way O2 would be able to swith from the Irish tariff to a UK one?

I did try to search for an answer on the forums but couldn't find anything that answered specific enough.

    thanks for any help.

O2 Ireland is a separate company, both owned by telephonica but that's about it. It's like asking if I could buy a T-Mobile iPhone in Belgium and use it on T in the UK
It will be locked to O2 in Ireland and unusable on O2 UK until you unlock it.

Not surprising you thought like that but, unfortunately they are completely separate.
