Default iphone stuck on white apple logo; safe restore process?

Was upgrading changes in Cydia, when my iphone 3gs had to reboot and has been stuck on the white apple logo. I have tried rebooting, tried to use iphonebrowser (did not detect the phone), to no avail.

I seems like restoring is the only option left to me. Could someone please help me with the process. Preferably I'd like to restore it just to the jailbroken, unlocked condition it was in before I ran into this problem. Here are some details about the unit:

    1) I have SHSH blobs saved for the phone both in Cydia and TinyUmbrella.
    2) I have regularly synchronized the phone through iTunes. (Am not sure if this is equivalent to backing up)
    3) Current firmware is 4.0 and baseband 5.13.04.

If restoring is the only option, is it possible that I could do so at least without upgrading the baseband and be able to get back all my contacts, messages and Cydia apps? Any pointers as to how I go about doing it? Thanks.

You should verify your last sync/backup - look at the size and date/time of the last backup
If you want to stay on iOS 4.0, then as long as you have a saved SHSH (for 4.0), you can use TinyUmbrella's TSS server feature to allow you to "shift-click restore" in iTunes and browse to a 4.0 IPSW even though Apple has long since stopped signing this.

The problem is re-jailbreaking (you likely used jailbreak me previously) - do you have a way to activate the phone legitimately via iTunes now? (remember that Apple has now blocked activation via phonebook sims)

The last sync was just 14 hours ago. Is sync and backup the same? What does the size of the backup tell me?
I still have the original ATT SIM that I got for the phone (I am no longer on AT&T). I think this should suffice to activate the phone legitimately?

How do I go about restoring and re-jailbreaking & unlocking the phone and restoring all my old stuff? I take it I should not set up the phone as new? Thanks.

Sync and backup are not the same thing, but a Sync in iTunes normally includes a stage where the backup is updated. If you have never turned that off (via a tweak) and your last sync took more than 10-30 seconds then you likely have a backup.

iTunes shows you a summary of devices and the latest backup for each - iTunes->Preferences->Devices

The AT&T sim should be fine.

Get latest TinyUmbrella, run it, check your device has a 4.0 or 4.0.1 SHSH saved
    Start TSS Server in TinyUmbrella
Force your iPhone into recovery or DFU mode (doesn't matter which)
    Download a 4.0 or 4.0.1 IPSW
Shift-click restore in iTunes (option-click on mac)
Restore the phone with a stock 4.0 or 4.0.1 IPSW
Activate via iTunes with AT&T sim

Thank you very much Olethros! Followed your instructions step by step and it worked perfectly! Just wanted to add that I had aptbackup earlier. Reinstalled it and Restored it; which brought back most of my Cydia apps.
