Default Iphone rebooting and everything is greek to me

A friend asked me to look at his iPhone as it was constantly rebooting from the main apple booting screen. From research I determined it needed to be restored. Of course I can't restore it, using traditional methods, as it will restore it to 3.1.3, non jailbreakable. So I found a link to 3.1.2, downloaded it, and of course I am getting the non authorized message. So I did some more research, and set my hosts file to point to cyida, did a /ipconfig /flushdns, and still getting the not authorized message. This leads me to believe (and I am not sure) that perhaps the information that is needed is not stored on the cydia server, however another post I read somewhere mentioned that itunes would give an error, rather then a not authorized message. I have read a bit of the sticky topic about an umbrella, but with that I apparently need these shsh files, whatever they are, in addition the links in the main post link to private files. So, the question is, what is my next step, or am I going about this totally wrong?
    The details are as follows:
The phone is a 16 Gig 3gs running on the Fido network in Canada
I THINK, but am not sure, the last firmware on the phone was 3.1.2, but, as I said, I can't be sure. The owner doesn't really know that much.
So, can someone give me a hand please? What do I do now?

On a semi related subject, the bit I have read warnings about keeping your own shsh on your own computer as well, but the directions are for 3.1 Will the same work for 3.1.2, as I wish to store mine for my personal phone. Or is there a way to pull it directly from the phone if the phone is working? (mine is working, its the friends who isn't)

I would be grateful for any incite.

If the shsh are not stored and the iphone has the new bootrom then there is nothing you can do.

Cydia tells you on it's startup/homescreen what OS versions you have a SHSH for - mine says 3.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3 for example.

The only reliable way to determine which bootrom version is to manually put the phone into DFU mode and read the bootrom version from the USB properties. PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X

The bootrom is the first piece of code executed on the phone, it is burned into a chip at the factory and can never be changed without replacing your phone's main logic board.

359.3 is the bootrom version. Is the an old, or a new one? And what one is the new one, if this one isn't?

Now, that being said, the phone won't boot. Its either an endless reboot loop, DFU or recovery, so using the phone to access cyida is impossible, (However thank you for the info, I know what version they have for my personal iphone) So, how, using the iphone in its current condition, or another program or application, do I determine what shsh's Cydia has on file for that iphone, as the simplest problem may be that I am trying to install 3.1.2, and there is no shsh available for that os, but is available for another.

Thanks for all the help so far, and in advance for any other.

Were you jailbroken before? if so your best option is to restore with custom ipsw made with pwnagetool.

Can you provide a link with directions for me so that I may know how to do that. The only thing I have ever done is jailbreak with blackra1n, so I require some info on how to install a custom firmware.

The only software to make custom IPSW on windows is sn0wbreeze and that will never be supported on this forum. We try hard to recommend only tools that are legitimate and well tested. Sn0wbreeze is neither of these. It will probably work for you (I have heard that most of the initial bugs are fixed), but the risk is yours to take.

The best option is to borrow a mac to make the IPSW. Then transfer the IPSW to your windows machine. As you are already jailbroken you can simply shift-click restore in iTunes and select the custom IPSW.

Or you can try and download a pre-made IPSW from the net. Distribution of customised IPSW is illegal (it is Apple copyrighted material) so we are not allowed to provide links to custom IPSW on this forum. Using custom IPSW that you download can be risky as it is possible they are incorrectly labelled or that they could contain unwanted extra software/patches.
