Unhappy iPhone 3GS won't boot up, help please

    Hi,

I have here an iPhone 3GS and it simply won't boot up.
It was from a friend that now got the iPhone 4.
It had fw 4.2.1 (not jailbroken) and I attemped a jailbreak with redsn0w.
    Apparently something went wrong.
Now it doesn't boot up. Stays stuck on the Apple logo.
Also, if I try to make an official restore with iTunes, I get an error saying this built isnt allowed on my device. Even when using Apple's official fw 4.3.3.
Anyone has any a idea what could be?
I don't know what else to do...
    Thanks.

This is probably because the 4.2.1 redsn0w jailbreak is tethered, try running redsn0w and select just boot tethered now.

Still doesnt work. Same problem, stuck on apple logo.
I think something went wrong with the jailbreak.
I cant restore it to official fw anymore.

OK, assuming you don't rely on unlock:
Make sure TinyUmbrella is not running and your hosts file doesn't redirect gs.apple.com.
Launch redsn0w, select current firmware, select enter pwned dfu, restore to official 4.3.3 IPSW.

Any problem post here, if the restore fails, post restore log.

How do I make sure the hosts file doesnt redirect gs.apple.com?

OK. I was able to do a full official restore with iTunes to the last fw 4.3.3.
I connected it to a windows machine and it worked. Dont know if because of windows or because the iTunes was from an older version.
What's the best way now to unlock the iPhone in order to be able to use my sim card?
I dont need it unlock. I just want to be able to have my sim card in it. I would like to have it as an "original" "oficial" iPhone, with no ilegal software in it, if possible.
    Thanks.

Unlock is when you want to use your phone with a different carrier, so yes, what you want is an unlock. What you need to do in order to unlock your iPhone 3GS is update the baseband to the iPad baseband with redsn0w, search a bit and you can find a tutorial.
Officially unlocked iPhones are factory unlocked, which means they are sold this way, currently there's no way to "Officially unlock" a locked iPhone.
Last but not least, Jailbreaking is not illegal, so you don't have to worry, there's nothing illegal about installing Cydia and ultrasn0w.

I got this info from f0recast:

    Serial #: 84928M...
    Baseband: 05.16.02
    Bootloader: 6.4
    Model: MC637

    Jailbreakable? Only with SHSH Blobs.
    Unlockable? No
    Tethered? Depends on jailbreak.

I read if I update the baseband to the iPad baseband I wont be able to reverse it. Is it true? And I will loose GPS capabilities.
I dont need Cydia or anything else. I will use official apps from the app store. Can I still use them if I do this unlock with the iPad baseband?
    Thanks.

Yes, it's true, you can't reverse it. And yes, you loose GPS.
You can still use everything your iPhone currently has (except GPS), including official apps from the app store. Cydia is also installed, you don't need to use it but you can.
