I have purchased a 32GB iPhone. The ipPhone has ios 4.0 and the old bootrom.
This phone has never been jailbroken or unlocked. As I am new to the iPhone
but a long time Apple user, it is my best understanding that this iPhone cannot
yet be jailbroken, as the ios has been upgraded to 4.0? I do not have, nor do I believe the previous owner has the ECID SHSH saved, so I have no way of downgrading the software to 3.1.3. Are there any other options I have to jailbreak the phone or downgrade the software? Will it ever be able to be jailbroken as the iPhone-dev team seems to have turned their attention to the iPhone 4.0.

You can check with tinyumberella. Just by chance, the previous owner of the phone may of had it jailbroken and backed up shsh with cydia.

There will be a jailbreak for ios4.0 on the 3gs - this will be released with the iPhone 4 jb. Or at least expected to be.
