Mine doesn't say "(recovery mode)". Mine says "(DFU Mode)".

Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode). Is that OK?

Then we run the code and save the resulting jibberish for some reason? Do I have that right?

.... Mine very specifically said "(Recovery mode)" and not "(DFU Mode)". You weren't supposed to enter DFU mode anyways:

    1) With iPhone powered off, plug USB cable into PC and into iPhone
    2) Hold home button on iPhone until the Connect to iTunes picture comes up on iPhone
    3) Open program and get your ECID.

I plan to buy one this week, but since there is no JB/Unlock available I was wondering if this would still work? I don't have a contract with AT&T.

Just wanna know before I buy it!

    Thanks in advance.

It should. The 3G S hardware is still coming with 3.0 RTM on it, so you should be OK for the time being.
