I'm hoping someone might be able to help me and I apologize in advance if I sound like a newbie. Apparently, I'm not as tech savvy as I sometimes like to think.

Ok, here's the deal: I jailbroke my iPhone 3GS about a year ago and have been running cydia and using installous to download apps. Before I was able to jailbreak the phone, I first had to downgrade my firmware, and then followed all the steps to change the host file settings on my computer so that it would bypass Apple's server and work with Saurik's server. Everything was working fine until about a month ago. I think that the problem started once I installed a Cydia update about a month ago. My springboard started crashing a lot, installous kept giving me errors, my phone would shut off at 10% battery, and it would freeze sometimes. Last week, my phone switched from showing "AT&T" to "No service" and sometimes would switch to "Searching" but would never connect to the network or even WiFi. When I look in the settings, it says "Network unavailable." After two days of messing around in Cydia trying to fix the problem, I decided to just restore the phone and update to the latest firmware in order to delete Cydia and start from scratch. At first, iTunes was giving me an error, but once I switched my host file settings back to Apple's server, I was able to restore the phone from a backup in iTunes. But it still says "No Service" and "Network Unavailable" and under network settings "Personal Hotspot" seems to be "thinking" or stuck in an infinite loop.

I ended up just upgrading to the iPhone 4, but I am still determined to figure this out and fix my 3GS. Any help would be very, very, very appreciated.

If you don't want to pay a fair price for software, why did you spend so much on an iPhone 3GS and now iPhone 4 + monthly plan/service in the first place?
