That 3GS is from week 44. iPhones produced after week 40 2009 have the new bootrom if that is what you are referring to by new model.

Have you tried blackra1n? What version does the USB controller say the installed bootrom iBoot is when you connect it in DFU mode?

Not really, my friend has a 3GS which produced in week 41, he can still jailbreak without a problem, even able to reboot without stucking at recovery mode.

Mine, week 48 is only tethered jailbreakable.

Yes the only true way to check if your iPhone supports an untethered jailbreak (without actually jailbreaking) is to check the iBoot version via this link PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X

The roughly week 40 message was intended to help people who wanted to be able to get an idea of the bootrom status without opening the box or turning the iPhone on.
