Default iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G?

    Hi everybody,

I'm able to buy an iPhone here in the US with the NO Commitment option in the Best Buy. I've the option to choose between the iPhone 3G (16GB, $549) and the iPhone 3GS (16GB, 600$). I would go for the iPhone 3GS but I will need to jailbreak and unlock it in order to use it in my country (the Netherlands). There are actually some things that stop me from buying the 3GS. I know this is the place where I can find my answers, it is (was?) the home of the iPhone Dev-Team so, there must be someone who can answer my questions.
    1. I know Apple build in a new security layer, the ECID, and that is one of the thinks that stops me from buying the 3GS. With the ECID signchecks, Apple is able to stop me from downgrading (and upgrading a jailbroken device?) my firmware version. I know that, if I capture the iBSS, iBEC and the unique certificate via purplera1n.com, I will be able to downgrade (and update?) my firmware version to 3.0 again. But capturing these things will only be possible when the phone is on firmware 3.0. That brings me at point 2.

    2. I would buy the iPhone 3GS within the next 1,5 weeks. I know Apple is working on 3.1 (there were already 2 beta's for dev's), How big is the chance that there will be a newer version on the iPhone 3GS in the upcoming 1,5 weeks? Is it possible that the phones contain another firmware version that 3.0?

    3. The iPhone 3GS has been out for about 1 month now, and the jailbreak and unlock tools are in there pretty early stage. Are there many issues with jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone 3GS? I know there are 2 ways to jailbreak and unlock the 3GS, and I would go for the Dev-Team's tools, but how "sure" are the jailbreak and the unlock? Is it comparable with the assurance of the iPhone 3G unlock and jailbreak?

Those are the question that I'd like to know. I'm not really a noob in these things, I follow news daily and know pretty much about all the other devices, but the iPhone 3GS is pretty new to me.
I hope someone can answer these questions. Could you also give me some explanation about how the ECID exactly works? (or tell me somewhere where I can read about it, I already read GeoHots blog and search at the iPhone wiki, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of info on that...)

Anyway, thank you very much in advance!

    Vincent

Personally I would go for the 3GS and simply retrieve the EID certificates like the dev team and Geohot instruct and hope this allows us to use the dev teams tools to upgrade to 3.1 etc with no problems. At the moment the second revision of geohot and dev teams unlocks seem to be working perfectly on most 3GS iphones

This time in 6 months I think the iphone 3G will sort of be forgotten about like the 2G is now (still updating firmware but anything new application or feature wise will only be for the 3GS with its advanced hardware). Wouldnt suprise me that iphone 3.0 OS is the final update for the old 2G as it is prob as far as it can go.

Whichever option you choose you need to buy it now - 3.1 is imminent and I have a gut feeling the 3GS will be locked for a long time (quite possibly the 3G too) hence if you dont buy now then in the future your only option could be a used, scratched 3GS/3G

i would got for the 3gs if thats the difference in price cuz you have to do all the jailbreaking and unlocking anyways right?? besides 3gs is faster
Get the latest info for NoAccSplash Here
Currently it should work on iOS 4.x - 6.x
If you'd like to help extend its functionality, the source is also available.

Havent looked at it that way, but you're right. Thanks.

I'm acctually a bit afraid that Apple releases 3.1 next week (maybe tueseday?) and that I'll have a 3.1 OTB...
But I dont think the devices with the 3.1 will ship that fast from china though...

Definitely buy the 3GS, especially if it's only $50 more, you'd be crazy not to. Whatever barriers apple introduced with the 3GS have already been circumvented and are no issue assuming that you get yours before 3.1.
