iPhone 3GS - 3.0.1 fails RedSn0w
Hi,
A friend of mine I tried to erase all information on an jailbroken and ultrasn0w-unlocked iPhone 3GS. (Settings->General->Reset->Reset all)
After that it was back to the iTunes-logo/emergency screen etc like it always is when its unboxed. However, I am having problems running RedSn0w. All goes well in RedSn0w on the computer, but nothing happens with the phone. When the phone is in restore-mode RedSn0w detects it and starts to work. The screen on the iPhone shows the normal restore-image and then turns black (not like when its turned off, but like its on without any image).
Nothing happens and I just turn it off and its back to the emergency-screen. Same thing happens in redsn0w over and over (probaly not too smart to run it multiple times, but I had to find out if I was just unlucky the first time).
Normally I would just restore the phone to 3.0 or 3.0.1 in iTunes, but that just gives me the 3002-error since Apple no longer sings the firmwares. I have also tried with the edited "hosts"-file, apparently the files are not back-up by Cydia.
I have 2 questions:
1. Is there any way I can find out if the phone is 3.1? My friend says he did not update or upgrade, but you never know.
2. Could purplerain maybe get the job done? (never tried, have sticked to redsn0w and the dev team since the beginning - you are btw doing a wonderful job!)
I appreciate any response and any help getting this sorted out.

How can I find out if the iPhone has been updated to 3.1?
I remember on the first iPhones, you could type *3001*12345*# or something to get that information.

I found an old ATT-Sim and found out the phone is 3.1, which means this is no big mystery anymore.
