Default Identify firmware by box - possible?

I've bought an iphone 3Gs at best buy today, because I wanted to hurry before 3.1 would arrive at the stores. The guy at the store said that I'm lucky since today they got the shipment. He didn't know what firmware, so I bought one. It's now sitting at the box closed, because I'm afraid it's the new 3.1 which can't be jail-braked. Is there any way to know by the box? If it's 3.1 I'd like to return it.

    Thanks a lot.

No, you can't tell unless you activate it.

If you're really concerned about the firmware version, don't buy it from Apple and instead buy it from one of the worldwide carriers themselves as they tend to keep significant stock on-hand. They are the most likely to have the old firmware.

One other thing that you can do to *confirm* that the phone that you already have has the old firmware version is to get the serial number off of your box and type it into here:
    Klantenservice: Serienummers

That will let you see all kinds of information about your device as well as see it's manufacture date.

With some careful process of elimination, you can be reasonably assured that you have the 3.0 or 3.0.1 firmware based on the release date of the firmware -1 week.
