Default How to Jailbreak 3.1.3 on the yet to be released "Spirit" Jailbreak?

Hi, I have a iPhone 3GS (3.1.3 with BB 05.12.01). I have been hearing about the new jailbreak "Spirit" that will be released by Comex on Friday. I have a few questions to make sure that I do it the right way and not end up in trouble. Kindly clarify the same.

    1. Does this jailbreak apply for 3.1.3 BB: 05.12.01?

    2. If this jailbreak applies for my phone- I have never jailbroken my phone before and this would be my first time doing it. I keep hearing about backing up your SHSH. I dont know what this means but I do get a feeling that if something messes up you can revert back to your old stuff if you had back'd up SHSH.

Can someone tell me, as a first timer if I were to use this jailbreak solution what are the things that needs to be done to ensure a successful jailbreak and even if something goes wrong how I could actually get it reverted back to my old phone? In short, I am looking for first timer jail-breaking guide and possibly around the Spirit Jailbreak.

Your response would be much appreciated. Thanks!

It will be released soon, but nearly 100% likely not today.

It works on 3.1.3 if you are already activated (or somehow hacktivated)

This means you must be able to already use the iPhone and not be stuck at a connect to iTunes to activate screen.

Backing up your SHSH is VERY important. You are right, it allows you to revert back to the OS that you have a SHSH backed up for (say for example if Apple released 3.1.4 to close off Spirit and you accidentally upgrade, then 3GS owners can only downgrade again with a 3.1.3 SHSH

See Hack that Phone - iPhone 3G S: Restoring "forbidden" firmware for a procedure

Caching Apple's Signature Server - Jay Freeman (saurik) for background information

and The Firmware Umbrella for the tool which can backup SHSH without jailbreaking.

This will not be available until after release.
General advice, don't upgrade iTunes or allow iTunes to update the iPhone OS before you know that this is safe.

Get a SHSH as early as possible and keep it safe (I recommend a copy on Cydia and a copy on your local machine)

Thanks Olethros for your detailed reply. I still have a few questions based on your responses. Here are those:

    1. You said the jailbreak will work on 3.1.3 (BB:05.12.01) if the iPhone is already activated. My question: I know you already tried to explain what' the definition of "activated". Just to make sure I understood it correctly -- I have been able to use my iPhone in all possible ways except for the fact that I dont use to talk - because i still havent jailbroken/unlocked it yet for me to use it with a carrier in my home town. Does this mean I have a activated phone? I would think so, but would be great if you can confirm.

    2. Backing up SHSH -- on this topic you have given me three links. Again I would like to confirm my understanding:

    a. Hack that Phone link -- this details the procedure on restoring old firmware versions. This would come in handy if I happened to upgrade to a newer version (say 3.1.4) and if I had my SHSH's back'd up. Correct? Also, apparently this link lists out things based on Mac but am on PC. Is there anything available for Windows?
    b. Caching Apple' Signature server link -- this is more like for your information link which details the background on SHSHs etc. Correct?
    c. Firmware Umbrella - This is the actual software link which helps me backup my SHSH. Correct?

I have a couple of related questions:
    i. I downloaded the fw-umbrella-semaphore-222.zip software. Is this the right one?
ii. You have recommended a SHSH backup on Cydia and a copy on mu local machine. could you please help me understand how to backup on Cydia? Because I thought Cydia is something that only jailbroken phones have, correct? but like I said earlier, since my phone was never jailbroken before, how am I to do this?

Apologies if its questions over questions because i am completely new to this. As always will be extremely glad if you can answer my questions. Thanks a lot!

Expert77 -- to your question, I read a few blogs quoting direct source (comex) to have promised to release it on friday.

Thanks again for promptly responding to my queries.

Just wanted to give a quick update.. I think I just got my SHSH files back'd up. Umbrella tool that was suggested proved very helpful. But just one quick thing:

    1. in this tool, when asked for a repository i selected "local host" first but it didnt work. then i selected Saurik - Cydia and i got a .bak file of size 64KB . Is this the right one?

    2. then i selected "apple" as the repository and i got a .shsh file of size 68KB

    Did I get this right?

You have done this right.. It is also good that you have requested a SHSH via Cydia that way you have a backup there as well.

My understanding is that difference in size is mostly cosmetic. They are both valid SHSH files.
