Depending on what level Apple Care plan you have, some of the higher end ones actually do cover accidental damage and would repair the device for you. I would contact Apple first to find out.
If they classify it as out of warranty, you can either contact one of the few parts distributors and buy a replacement screen lens or LCD assembly and replace it that way, or use one of those scratch removal concoctions. I've never used one of the removal liquids personally, but there are some decent reviews of them around if you google "scratch removal glass". My concern would be whether or not they would interfere with the capacitive touch functionality of the device.
There aren't really any 'tricks' to getting the device replaced when there is hardware damage if it's not covered under warranty -- it'll be very difficult to convince them that they should honor the warranty if accidental damage isn't covered, because there's really no way to hide the scratches on the front.
Last ditch effort, if you have cell phone insurance you can have an accident that requires you to use that insurance -- usually it's like $35 or $45 but you still get a replacement phone. I'd still classify that as slightly less than moral or ethical, but I'm sure you could somehow make it work.

For apple to be able to replace your iPhone, you need have some good excuse.
For example, you can say the battery doesn't last as long as you expect etc.
Then apple will normally replace it with a new, like for like new iPhone , if you iPhone still covered by Apple limited warranty.
For out of warranty replacement, in the UK, Apple charge £139.00
If the out of warranty iPhone need replaced only because the battery, Apple will charge you £79.00.
They don't change battery, instead the change the iPhone.
Also, if your iPhone in warranty and have some issue with the screen only, for example.
, the dead pixels, they Apple will change the screen only, not the whole iPhone. So just bear in mind, if you want replace the whole iPhone, your excuse must not be the screen issue.
