Got a new iPhone, have a few questions
Hey all, I just bought my first cell phone (iPhone 3GS with 3.1 firmware) today. My friend suggested that I jailbreak it (and unlock it so I can go with other carriers if I chose to do so).
I've tried to do a little research but am still confused.
Is it currently possible to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS with 3.1 firmware (mine came with it when I bought it, I did not upgrade)? Also, is it really worth it to jail break the iPhone? What are your thoughts/opinions on this matter?
Is it currently possible to unlock said iPhone?
If not, should it be possible in the near future?
Also, I am a Linux user and have been using Linux on iPod for a very long time. How is the Linux progress for the iPhone so far (for those of you interested in Linux)?
Is there an SDK for the iPhone, or some way to develop your own apps?
Sorry if I irritated anyone by asking such noob questions or posting in the wrong section or anything else like that.

Jailbreak: Not at this time as your phone came with 3.1
Unlock: Not any time soon, see above answer.
Linux progress for the iPhone: Check this part of boards: iPhone Linux - Hackint0sh
SDK: iPhone Dev Center - Apple Developer Connection

Also, thanks for the Linux link. I will be following that closely.

Thanks. Is it possible to downgrade my 3.1 firmware to 3.0.1 and then jailbreak it?

You cannot presently downgrade 3.1 unless your 3.0/3.0.1 SHSH is on file with Cydia -- which it likely isn't as your phone isn't yet jailbroken... Unfortunately you'll need to wait until redsn0w for the iPhone 3G S, and that should get you a working jailbreak. AS far as an unlock goes, I wouldn't hold your breath. If speculation has any merit, it's going to be a _looooong_ time before the 3.1 baseband is unlocked.
