    Default ECID/purplera1n AND/OR new iBSS/iBEC capturing method?

If I already found my ECID# and used it with geohot's purplera1n site, do I need to go through the process outlined in tonight's Dev Team blog post to get the iBEC and iBSS files through recovery and DFU modes?

The Dev Team didn't clarify this point in their new post.

I want to be able to jailbreak and unlock my 3GS when the Dev Team releases their tools.

    Thanks!

Both methods are sound solutions. The major difference being geohots method is simple, requiring less time and effort. It gets you what you need, and does not require 2 full restores, then re-synching all your stuff which in itself is a very long process, especially if you have loads of media.
The dev team method on the other hand offers redundancy, which equates to greater "safety". But it requires much more time spent, and more work for you.
Geohot already demonstrated that a jailbreak can be achieved using what is contained in the file from purplera1n. Personally, that is good enough for me. And I'd rather not go through the 2 restore+re-synch which will probably take at least 1 hour.
But like I said elsewhere, if you want to be completely safe and want be cover your bases, it's not a bad idea to get the 2 files while you still can.

Thanks. It makes sense to have a bit of redundancy to ensure a future jb/unlock. I don't mind doing the new process. Best kind of project to improve my meager computer skills.

    Default purplera1n not returning certificate

I guess this is what happens if the apple service is down? Just want to be clear that if I submit my ECID and purplera1n does nothing when I submit then I guess there is no way to get the certificate? Any other suggestions? Otherwise, it is on to generating the iBSS and iBEC?

    Thanks

Yes. You should get your iBEC and iBSS files generated during restores in Recovery and DFU modes. Musclenerd and Planetbeing both clarified that we should have these, in addition to the purplera1n file.

    FROM MUSCLENERD:
    - "purplera1n file isn't ecid..it's iBSS signed with your ECID. Each file has separate result. iBSS is important, so too is iBEC"

    - "iBEC is a little more useful for crossing security epochs because both legit iBoot and legit IBSS accept it."

    FROM PLANETBEING:
    - "Belated clarification: still need to either ra1n, USB dump, or copy tmp. Tmp is just easier than USB and doesn't scream to Apple you jb."

    - "If you already used purplera1n you are prolly safe for jb, though you cannot restore to totally stock 3.0 without all files (not just ibss)"

    - "ra1n only gets you the part that would be unique to your phone, not the whole thing with the code."

    Wink ECID etc

I already got the ECID, but I would like "just" to unlock my iPhone 3Gs bought in Japan and use it with a foreign SIM card when I travel. I don`t need to jailbreak to have cydia App or similar stuff. So I still need to get the other two files IBEC and IBSS? I hope that ECID will be enough.
    Please let me know

Ultrasn0w (or an Ultrasn0w-like app) will be needed for unlocking. It's located in Cydia and you can't use it, or access Cydia, unless you jailbreak your phone first.
