That is a bit odd if you are restoring to iPhone OS 4.0

    Are you running iTunes 9.2?

There is no problem running iTunes 9.2 with an iPhone that is already jailbroken with Spirit. The problems occur if you try and use Spirit to jailbreak an iPhone on a computer where iTunes 9.2 is already installed. This causes a bootloop on the iPhone.

Spirit will screw up your iPhone if you try and upgrade to iOS 4. Need to remove spirit by restoring OS 3.1.2 (with saved SHSH) and then pwn with redsn0w, blackra1n then if you have old bootrom you can restore to Pwnagetool custom iOS 4.0

Try to restore in Recovery mode or DFU Mode. Or may be your hosts file was altered, try to restore it to original state.
