Question Cheapest way to get a 3GS?

I currently have a 2G iphone unlocked running a vodafone SIM only in the uk, i really want a new 3GS and i know there is no unlock yet but im sure there will be eventually and i still want to use my vodafone SIM in it, so i just wonderd whats the cheapest way of getting a 3GS handset without having to sign a contract?

Can u get a contract phone in the apple store with activating it there and then?

    Thanks

It's not a case of the cheapest way it's actually trying to find somewhere that has them in stock! Been trying local stores all morning with no luck.

Default I have not tested this, let me know if you do

here is a LOCKED 3GS you can buy without contract
    How to purchase a contract-free iPhone 3G S directly from Apple.com | iPhonefreak

here is a FACTORY UNLOCKED 3GS you can buy without contract
    Digital-Tek Ltd.

fwiw, ATT costs $45 a month more than Tmobile USA, as I have the 5.99Tzones internet plan...

BUT, Tmobile USA does not support 3G so Tmo serves up a slower internet experience, 200mbps, whereas ATT is super fast, 500mbps

So my question is, do I want to take advantage of ATT's faster internet, or do I want to save $600 a year by staying with SlowMobile, I mean Tmobile <g>

The issue for me, is that about half the time, Tmobile does not have coverage at my house in California, whereas ATT does..

Good luck in your decision, and BTW, GeoHot announced an unlock for 3GS today..

I was in the same predicament. I get no signal in the house with T-mobile. Also the economical $5.99 tzones plan is very slow.

anyway, i just switched over to ATT and got a 3GS. Although ATT is not cheap but not too bad in my situation. I got a family plan with 5 phones, my only extra monthly cost is the $30 data plan. I also get a discount on the plan because my employer has a deal with ATT. In all, the price difference is not too bad.

With that said, with the fast 3G network, checking mail, twittering, browsing, looks up maps and etc ... is quite impressive and brought a whole new experience to the iphone when comparing with the tzone slower network

    Thanks a lot dtube :-)

now I have to copy you.. and go over to the dark side

fwiw the link I gave to the buy a fully unlocked phone does not accept normal payments like paypal or credit card.. I dont know if these folks are legit..

they want a Western Union payment, which adds $40 to the cost.. or a money gram, which adds $50...

and the hack I posted to shop the apple store thru a backdoor, has been closed.. apparently.. cat, mouse, cat

as far cancelling an ATT contract within 30 days, I did that with my 3G.. Here is the cost breakdown, 199 for the phone, 105 for a month of service, 36 activation, and 170 early termination.. total cost $510 +tax and fees.. I dont know if the 3GS works the same, but Im guessing it does..

anyone who actually does any of these ways of getting a 3GS please confirm..

I saw a post somewhere in the forum where the person mentioned that you can walk into Apple Store and asked for an "unsubsidized" iphone. I believe the person mentioned cost is $699 for a 32GB 3GS.

Not sure how reliable this information is but it may be worth a shot.

Im pretty confident I could break contract on a 3GS purchased from ATT and keep the phone. It would be locked though..

And even after unlocking it, it still wont be able to use 3G on Tmobile USA.. but it would pay for the phone in monthly savings if I just stayed on SlowMobileUSA for a year..

The appeal of the Nevada vendor, is that they are claiming to sell FACTORY UNLOCKED iPhones.. That means never having to say sorry for Updating Firmware, and no more whining about when the latest unlock comes out..

I believe they still make you sign the 2 year contract, as ridiculous as that seems. I don't think you can actually walk out of an Apple store with an iPhone without signing a contract, at least in most countries.

However, if the phone is unsubsidized, you may be able to cancel the contract within the 30-day time period and not incur any termination fees or have to return the phone. I don't know, I haven't really looked into it that much, but it sounds possible if you're willing to foot the huge additional cost.

I mentioned earlier in Macrumors and here about getting a NO COMMITMENT IPHONE FROM THE APPLESTORE! I bought 4 units the past couple of days. They do charge you $699 for the 32GB version and $599 for the 16GB.
